Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

I swear its always weird to realize that alot of these "diverse and lgbt inclusive" kids shows aren't even being watched by children but by grown ass adults with developmental isssue's. Still remember going into a government building and seeing the only fat black women in a group of nerdy white guys gush about the new netflix Carmen Sandiego show
You know, it is really funny seeing adults trying to make animation for kids and failing miserably.
I've said it once, I'll keep saying it until I'm blue in the face: that's a feature, not a bug. When they say they're marketing to kids, what they really mean are "kids at heart" - aka, manchildren/womenchildren.

The only show in this category that I have ever seen children like is Steven Universe.

When it comes to animation, kids only seem to like SpongeBob, The Loud House, Paw Patrol, Ben 10, TTG, and that is about it. I have no idea where Disney Channel or Netflix are getting their viewers from.

It's ironically the stuff actually made for children that tends to get the actual effort put into it. Say what you want about shows like bluey or paw patrol but the ratings and reception for those shows among kids and their families don't lie. Hell as bad as peppa pig is, and I mean it is bad... At least it's only guilty of being inane and dull. With the occasional bad message not withstanding.

I got around to watching The ghost and molly McGee, and I gotta say as much as disney is really pushing it with all these "tween girl with attitude" shows to where it's getting old. GAMM is definitely a good one, between Owl house turning to ash in my mouth in just a season and Amphibia being set to end with a third. GAMM Is a decent follow up to both, especially since its more focused on humor and is a more slice of life show than the fantasy adventure shows owl house and Amphibia were.

Seriously though aside Milo murphy's law has their been any Disney television animation shows with the lead being male and a focus on slice of life? Aside Milo murphy the only other one i recall is Phineas and Ferb which has been on again off again with specials (but no new seasons) that's become something of a living zombie of show.
While I have less than favorable opinions about Milo Murphy’s Law (second season shot itself in the foot trying to be Phineas and Ferb 2), it was a breath of fresh air being a male led slice of life series. It was only able to come to fruition because of Phineas and Ferb’s success, but PnF was a rare gem that I haven’t seen any cartoon since then have the success and influence of. I’m still not sure how they pulled that off; I guess it just existed at the right time when cable still ruled and there was no other good animated series on the air. There was merchandise galore, a stage show, soundtracks, t-shirts, you name it. I was in high school and everyone watched it, while it still appealed to kids and was something you could talk to your little siblings and cousins about.

Yes, there is still one male led slice of life show, and that’s Big City Greens (well, the two main characters are a brother and sister, but it doesn’t feel like a feminine series the way the others do). I haven’t seen it in a couple of years, but it’s pretty funny, and it has some heart to it. It’s about a family moving from the country to the city to live with their grandma, and they don’t quite mesh into the culture of the city.

Poking my head over from the Anime thread. Is there a single show since I gave up after Gravity Falls to watch? I'm an animation nerd at heart, but nothing western has really done it for me in a while.
I felt this same way until I was introduced to Miraculous Ladybug. I have a great time watching it, but one of the first realizations I had while watching it is that it’s NOT going to be everyone’s cup of tea. You either really love it or you just don’t. It’s like a shoujo/superhero series; the two main leads are classmates and superhero partners, with all of their friends gradually joining the superhero team in secret, and each character really stands out and has their own storylines/development. Marinette has a crush on Adrien, while his alter ego, Chat Noir, has a crush on her alter ego, Ladybug, while they’re unaware of each other’s secret identity, and it results in some sweet and funny shenanigans. If you like Kim Possible, Sailor Moon, and/or TMNT, it could be up your alley. It’s definitely campy (in a charming way, IMO), but it’s also got this crazy balance with darker and angsty aspects, so if that’s more your speed, I’ll mention how
Adrien’s emotionally abusive father is secretly the villain, and his goal is to obtain the jewels that give Ladybug and Chat Noir their powers, in order to make a wish to reset reality and revive his wife whose body is incubated in the basement of their mansion, stuck in a magical coma from using a damaged miraculous jewel for...creating something.

Something I've noticed in a lot of animated shows recently. The removal of sharp edges and pointed tips in character designs.

Look at turning red, already it gets flack for being the calarts style in 3D but notice how almost all the characters have too many rounded features? Mouths, eyes, teeth. Then as much as it might pain some of you let's go back to thundercats roar. Even Mrenter pointed this out but yes... Lion o's sword has been Turned almost completely rounded to where it looks like a kids toy.

You know what this sudden fear of all things sharp and pointy in animation is reminding me of? That interview J Micheal strayszinki did for the making of the real Ghostbusters. He said that from the second season onwards the network gave him notes from some so called "consulting firm" telling him that they had to redesign Jeanine because, "children are afraid of sharp objects, redesign Jeanine to have round glasses and less protruding cheek bones. "

Guess Hegelian dialects never fail.

Tell me, what exactly is a Hegelian dialect?

But what you're seeing now is a fad and not something imposed on cartoons by a pressure group full of morons.

BTW, the Lupo the Butcher cartoon is no longer happening at Netflix. I hear the company thought Antonucci's pilot was too much. They wanted him to tone it down to a PG-13 and he refused.

Poor Danny. (:_(

Sort of want to watch the new Dreamworks The Bad Guys, even though it is furry bait (wolf character was designed to be as hot as possible), and I expect the plot to be entirely predictable.

I like the artstyle which was apparently inspired by French comics + the semi-retro LA setting + the gang's charisma & character dynamics.

Opinion after watching it:

- The animation is really good, I can see where the Lupin the 3rd comparisons come from.
- Character designs are clean and sharp. Mr. Wolf is basically Clooney Coolguy, as expected, Mr. Snake is a Hunter S. Thompson expy.
- Props to the designers and animators for getting so much character into a snake, which is basically a tube and a head.
- There's lots of good chemistry between the crew, and most of the characters are fairly charismatic and memorable.
- The voice acting for the most part flows well.
- I liked the Pulp Fiction-LA setting.
- The driving sequences are great with the quick shots of Mr. Wolf using his driving skills.
- I liked the first half of the movie more than the rest.
- I definitely want a sequel, I think moreso than a TV series- mainly for the animation. Otherwise, a TV series as a prequel to the movies would work well.
- The plot is a little messy, there's more unsuprising twists and backstabbing than at a furry convention.
- The Love Meteorite Gala should have been placed as part of the climax, the sequence and choreography is top-notch, and I think the final fight should have led out from it rather than them going to supermax. It feels like the plot sort of wobbles around and isn't as spectacular afterwards.
- Quoting another review:
It's a giddy structural disaster, setting up and then pivoting out of something like four different plots before the central conflict and players wind up precisely where you'd have expected an hour ago.
- Some of the plot points (i.e. choosing the 'good' life, good vs bad) are either sort of weak, or not well fleshed out. Some of them don't really go anywhere.
- On that point, the crew is more entertaining as the 'bad guys'.
- There are some lapses in logic, but this can be somewhat forgiven for being a kid's movie.
- The villain is predictable even from the trailers, and his scheme somewhat asinine. I honestly would have preferred a boilerplate take-over-the-world scheme over his steal-1-billion-dollars scheme.
- I wished Diane had less of a prominent role, her presence as the Crimson Paw sort of muddies the plot in the later half of the movie, whereas a stronger story could have been made focusing directly on the gang.
- Likewise, making her true identity more of an engima would have worked better in the context of this plot.
- Ms. Tarantula is the least charismatic of the crew, I feel like there must have been a better way to to work her into the crew dynamics.
- The reporter Tiffany Fluffit was annoying lol
- The police chief Misty was surprisingly great as a character.
- The BG human designs are a bit weird, since they all seem sort of stocky.
- I would have liked to have seen more of the gang's old life/interactions/heists before the Good Samaritan Awards, we see their cool hideout exactly once before it's emptied out.
- Like that, I wish we got more action from the rest of the gang other than Mr. Wolf and Mr. Snake. There's a bit of chemistry (mainly between Mr. Snake and Mr. Shark), but not as much.

Overall, this is a great kids' movie, and I agree with the 7-8/10 ratings- I'll be watching this again on stream, but mainly for bits and pieces where the animation really shines. I hope there'll be some deleted scenes as well.

I just stumbled across this by accident. I have no idea what's being said, but the animation is great and the story (for as much as I could comprehend) was enjoyably whimsical.

I love that short, I also had it in my wilhelm thread but basically the story is about princess and dragon with a goblin down the road who didn’t die because he merged his rotting essence with a golden apple.

"Man that eggman hoser, he's aboot to destroy that city! Wonder what his problem is, eh?"
I mean, the old Sonic cartoons were done in Canada...

I had to look it up but this is apparently a Moldovan folktale. I thought the program this is a part of did folktales from Russia proper and not the ex-USSR, but... well, they've done Ukrainian and Belarusian folktales as well.

I liked the one with the kid, bird, cat, and Fox.
