The quality had to be good because it cost so much time, effort and money to make. Now, you can pop out some animated slideshow for almost no money, very little effort, and only a few months of time.
It's a shame. We really did have something special when only a few did this for the time it too to make it work when it did.
Also, Looney Tunes Shorts were shown before movies in theatres back in the day. So, higher quality was generally expected to please the waiting movie goers.

Ten years ago, nobody would have given a shit about this movie. It’s just that everyone’s exhausted from a decade of “witty subversion,” politically correct boss bitches what don’t need no bumbling men, and stories that exist to push narratives that are openly destructive to a society. A very barebones, anemic, by-the-numbers story of friendship, acceptance, and the power of love so mundane you could confuse it with Titan A.E. or Meet the Robinsons is such a breath of fresh air that people are losing their minds.
Jokes on then because the fire nation invasion is very obviously based on what Japan did to the rest of Asia. It made what happened in Europe look downright mild. I remember accounts of literal Nazis trying to stop what happened in Nan King (not that they can process that there was nuances even in that group).

Genuinely feel the same way about the KOTH reboot. Its nowhere near what KOTH was in terms of writing and general quality, but people are just so exhausted of everything being shit that something mediocre makes them feel like its way better than it is.

Also they weren't solely aimed at children, although by the time of Looney Tunes they were further in that direction. The Fleischer Brothers stuff had some genuinely dark and disturbing content.
