Western Animation - Discuss American, Canadian, and European cartoons here (or just bitch about wokeshit, I guess)

The writers treat Adrien so bad that him getting the bare minimum of beating one villain in season 6 is seen as revolutionary.
I finally have an excuse to rant about this show, it's been driving me crazy and I have no one to discuss it with. Miraculous Ladybug is such a frustrating show because it has amazing individual moments, amazing episodes sprinkled in, interesting premise, interesting characters, but the overall writing quality is garbage. I have yet to see a good long term character arc or plotline. And the reason for that is that people who write this show prioritize "cool moments" "cool concepts" over telling a satisfying and cohesive story. Which is why they're great at individual scenes, but suck at long term story arcs. I often get the sense that the writers want to have their cake and eat it to, they just can't stick to one coheirent versions of characters or where tf the story is heading. MLB is a huge mess that feels like a dozen different stories in a trench coat all competing for screen time. That's because originally, the idea of Ladybug was conceived as something dark and gritty and then later got sanitized piece by piece to become suitable for children. But it's clear that the writers aren't over their original ideas, so they keep shoving some really dark and disturbing stuff into what is supposed to be a kid's show. Like, the whole sentimonster plot is the stuff of nightmares, I'd expect that from psychological horror, not a kid's show.

Adrien is the biggest "victim" of this style of writing. Originally Ladybug was meant to be a solo heroine and Chat Noir was meant to be at least in some way antagonistic towards Ladybug. Later even though they were supposed to work together he had his own agendas and selfish motives. By the time we got to the show Chat Noir become Ladybug's loyal partner (that sticks around even if he gets treated like garbage) and her number 1 hype man. And It's not like I dislike the idea of LB and CN being partners (I actually do like it a lot) but if that's the case then you have to write them as a duo, which MLB writers are not interested in doing, or at least not always. Because more often than not Ladybug is written like she's a solo heroine until the writers remember that "Oh crap, she's supposed to have a partner" and have her give CN 200th "you are irreplaceable to me kitty" speech but when she keeps excluding and lying to him over and over again those speeches feel hollow. Because if the writers were hang up on the idea of Chat Noir as an anti-hero that only occasionally helped out Ladybug instead of her partner a lot of things about the story would make sense, like why Paris treats LB as the only hero half the time or why Master Fu/Su Han/Guardian Ladybug doesn't trust him and exclude him or why the black cat miraculous seems sinister or why do we see Adrien get constantly akumatized/brainwashed/mind controlled or why the show keeps dropping hints of Chat Noir going rogue/becoming evil/working against Ladybug.

And, the biggest development of all; the kids find out that therapy exists. And Alya has to convince Marinette to let Adrien get therapy (because Marinette is basically Adrien's carer this season and he can't function without her there to tell him what to do) and that him needing therapy isn't a slight against her.
Alya keeps being the only sane person in that show, though I wonder why she or anyone else didn't tell Marinette to go see a therapist since she clearly needs it the most out of the whole cast.

Marinette and Adrien's relationship is... weird. You can do a lot of stuff with it, like write fluffy kid appropriate romance or take Marinette and/or Adrien's worst tendencies and amplify it to explore a toxic relationship (on one or both sides). The show seems to have gotten rid of Adrien's problematic tendencies but have turned Marinette's up to a 100. As more and more seasons come out there are more and more similarities between Marinette and Gabriel (Adrien's abusive father), which is just... Why? Like you can't tell me that in season 6 Marinette isn't a controlling and problematic (if not abusive, though maybe that's too harsh considering her age) girlfriend to Adrien.

Look, I'm not against exploring dark and twisted romances in fiction. But this is a kids' show and Marinette and Adrien are supposed to be each other's One True Love TM. The viewer is supposed to root for Marinette and her relationship with Adrien, so then what gives?

This just amplifies my belief that the writers of this show want to shove bunch of edgy and dark stuff into it with zero regard of how it effects the overall tone.

Does Austruc still have a hate boner for Chloe, or has that gone flaccid now that she’s in the background?
If I remember correctly, I heard that her ultimate fate was being sent to live with her mother. Her emotionally abusive mother who is a major reason why she was like that.

It's "Human male on female arthropod", or HMOFA for short.

French AIDS awareness campaigns are very interesting.
I'm distracted from the hot steamy scorpion sex by that man's dirty-ass bare feet. Was he walking around barefoot outside when he picked up that scorpion??

Sure, fuck it, the stupid shit like an evil organization of rich assholes, and another half sibling might as well happen. He’s a commie after all, not too shocking.
I didn't even mention the episode where the evil council watch a youtube video of the activist character gushing over how Paris is now the perfect eco-commie paradise. Transportation is free, there are no cars, all the food looks ugly and mouldy as hell (Paris is all vegan now, I think), there are no grades, the mayor has a youth council (coincidentally staffed by all of our cast members), everything is solar powered, and this is the way the rest of the world should be run. The council see that this video has over 7 billion views and decide that this 15 year old girl is a major threat to their organisation dedicated to being rich and evil.

It's so funny because this is the only time the council have actually done anything in the season so far, and their tactic for taking down Paris' unprofitable utopia is... have someone say 'Hey, maybe the mayor didn't win the election legitimately'. It is a baseless claim that gets easily dismissed by investigators. Weak shit for the illuminati, you think? Oh no. Just a random person suggesting that Saint Biden Bustier might not be on the up and up with no support at all is enough to send Mylene (activist teen) spiralling into locking herself in a room and crying "All we've worked for is meaningless, our perfect world is destroyed! The evil capitalists have won!"

Not even the funniest part. The main plot of the episode is that the evil council send Chloe's half-brother, Noe, to fund a movie that says that Ladybug and Chat Noir are actually villains who made a deal with Hawkmoth/Shadowmoth/Monarch and killed a journalist for exposing them. Mylene's dad leaks an early draft of the script to Marinette and immediately everyone decides that they need to lobby and protest for this movie to be disallowed from filming by the government. But Mylene's dad gets akumatized because his daughter is having a meltdown over people not bending over to the regime her perfect world.

So, how do Ladybug and Chat Noir stop the evil rich people form spreading a narrative that they're not actually heroes and will physically threaten and/or harm anyone who tries to expose them? They kidnap Noe, put him in front of the akumatized villain on live tv and threaten to let the akuma break his kneecaps if he doesn't renounce the film he's funding and admit that Ladybug and Chat Noir are obviously the good guys who'd never help the villains (Marinette even starts the episode saying that lying to cover up Gabriel's crimes might actually be for the best because the world is more perfect for it).

And no, this doesn't lead to the council immediately using this to their advantage and pointing out that Ladybug just proved their false narrative has merit.

I'm pretty sure Noe, or Chloe 2.0, solely exists because Astruc still has the hate boner, but can't let the Chloe lovers win by bringing her back for more than a cameo. He's even confirmed on twitter that Audrey has more affair kids where that came from. By the end of the series, I expect the final boss to be an entire planet filled with teenage bullies who are still somehow worse than the asshole who danced through the streets and sang as he happily committed genocide.
If I remember correctly, I heard that her ultimate fate was being sent to live with her mother. Her emotionally abusive mother who is a major reason why she was like that.
Austruc was surprised and disappointed when the episode came out and it turned out that someone cut the scene where Andre literally declares Chloe as a terrible daughter and that he'll take the 'good daughter' (Zoe) before handing her over to her abusive mother. Andre is supposed to be considered just a victim of Chloe, by the way, despite being the corrupt politician who raised her.

Damn it, was hoping that my comment would prove to be facetious, I did not think there would be a full on USSR Style Propoganda film. They’re lucky this is a cartoon, because the economy crashes ASAP, there’s never energy at night, and students just never learn or improve. The worst part is, I can actually envision this being their world view, holy shit. And of course the greatest threat is some asshole saying something. Off to the Gulag!

I am actually in disbeleif. The writing sounds bad, but holy shit that’s secondary to just the belief system you need to have to write something like this. It does go to the heart of Austruc though. The ends justify the means. The heroes can be evil, but so long as they are evil to the right people. Just thinking about someone like him, or at the very least his beliefs in power, kinda terrifies me. I don’t even know what to say. The morality of it is just gut churning. I feel like in the end, Marinette will once again be told that she was perfect and did everything right in regards to Adrian and the guy that destroyed the world, because that is canonically what happens when you use the Earrings and the Ring.
Speaking of horrible morality: Is Genocide Joe (Read as Felix) still a ‘goodguy’?

To this day, I still think they had gold with Chloe, and was aghast at what they did with her in season 3. It’s what ultimately convinced me that she had to be based on someone, and not was just an allegory for the Rich, because the amount of spite towards her was just unfathomable, unless it was based on someone he knew. Likely a bully, but I mean, we all had bullies, and well adjusted adults typically get over them.

Ah, yes, Felix. Yup, but it makes sense, these people think violence is okay, but disrupting harmony” or “hurting someones feelings is the devils work.

Wow, thank you for giving me a peak behind the curtain. This sounds awful. Shit happens now I guess, but it just sounds like everything about the show is worse. I know it’s to popular to get cancelled, but I do hope people and kids wake up and ditch this pile of dreck before it does some real damage.

I don't think she'll be told that lying was the right thing, but I do think she'll be told that she can't be blamed for it. The Fandom is already defending her with 'Gabriel actually totally manipulated her into lying for him by... asking her to tell Adrien about the times he tried to eb a good father'.

He's poor uwu baby since he cried after Adrien told him that they won't be friends anymore if he keeps doing a genocide. Though, to be fair, in the one episode he's appeared in so far (for some reason him and Adrien's aunt were not present at all in the episode where Adrien's grand parents come to decide who gets custody of him and his amok become an akumatized object) we have him mentioning that he gave all the miraculous to Monarch with a sad look. No one comments on it and we quickly move along, but it getting acknowledgement was more than I expected. He's just a sweet baby who didn't know any better after all.

Anyway, pictured here is Marinette's reaction to Adrien, completely ignorant to holding an amok in his hand and having no intent, accidentally commanding Felix to chill out:

And here is the boy who willingly gave Gabriel Adrien's slave collar amok knowing exactly what it was and having no need to offer it admonishing Adrien for being casual with Felix's amok:

Thomas has outright stated that she is based on his bully, along with Sabine being based on an ex girlfriend and Marinette based on the child he'd imagine them having together.

I knew about the girlfriend and imaginary daughter things. Can I ask where he said that about the bully? Last I checked, I thought he vehemently denied it on Twitter/X, saying it was cope for those who couldn’t comprehend his brilliance when it came to Chloe.

Ah yes, the good old she’s not responsible for her own choices excuse, someone said something to her. But then apply that to Chloe who was constantly manipulated, and that bitch got what she deserved. Fandoms suck no matter the media.

Oh, he was sad. That excuses giving powerful magical artifacts to a terrorist. Well good to know nothing too bad happened to the sweet little genocide baby.

So it’s better than last season, but that was such a low bar that even when clearing it, it’s still a shit show. That’s hilarious.

Edit: Looked up Noe’s design. Holy shit, him, Julika, and Rose are so fucking hard to look at even for a moment. Talk about downgrades. Then they glow up Chloe for her little cameo. Lol. Okay.

Can't find it, so assume I'm talking out of my ass.
I did however find that old post of him saying Chloe was worse than Vegeta:

Look guys, Vegeta blew up all those planets and slaughtered all those people for a cause... the cause of he liked blowing up planets and slaughtering people.

It's not that I'm against Environmentalism or telling kids to protect the planet, but no politician can fix that problem in three months, if someone claimed that they did they probably just run a greenwashing campaign, which is extra funny when this same show has acknowledged that greenwashing is a thing that exists and that elected officials, even the best intentioned ones can't just magic up a solution. But I guess they just threw all that in the water to sell a political message to little Timmy.

Also, this "eco-friendly" Paris is seriously giving me the creeps. This depiction basically screams "dystopia pretending to be an utopia," Brave New World style. It's giving me the same feelings as when I watch the whole line project from Saudi Arabia.

Though if we're going to talk about MLB politics I'll have you know that this show has at least one based character, Adrien's fencing teacher who wants to turn Louvre back into a fortress defending Paris, burn Liberty Leading the People and restore Monarchy (The French revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the human race). I'm only half joking and it's because these writers don't realize that their worldview isn't any more sophisticated than what they're parodying.

once you realize that France is one of the largest consumers of manga outside of Japan it makes so much sense why Miraculous and other shows like Totally Spies, Martin mystery, and Wakfu look like that.
Sometimes I wonder if America had been more open to manga like France and Italy that our original creations would've handled the animésque look so much better.
