Wow, it's like I never left /co/ in here!

I don't have Hulu or internet, not about to watch a rip of Animaniacs on my phone, so reading everyone's reactions is illuminating. Or is that cringe-inducing? Why is entertainment... not entertaining anymore?

When you don't do that and you try to mimic the style so much with software that's not prepared for that, you end up with the new Animaniacs reboot.

See, this makes me MOTI that hand-drawn animation is all but dead. They use this hefty software to animate and have to make everything "simplistic" for it when a skilled artist with a pencil can make cartoons that are actually pleasing to the eye and delightful to watch. Can we not have that anymore? Does no one care about animation as art? (Rhetorical question, ignore my cranky boomer ass) (Also a year ago I was a little optimistic when Klaus married traditional animation with computer effects, are we ever getting more of that?)

The trick is they're using it in a broad sense. If you swung your arms at any media (for a younger audience to narrow it down) in the past 30 years, you hitting something with at least two political references in it was a certainty. But the thing is politics were never the focus outside of parody (like school elections or something), just gentle nudges. From what I'm reading about nu-Animaniacs it's not only a nudge but a push and a shove off the deep end.

Dude wasn't even asking to be a part of the creative process at that point, he just to be involved in supervising the project in some way. Something that would've been a free PR boost for the show and would've made older fans happy. And they basically just went "Sit down old man, let the real professionals take care of this." They couldn't even do it over the phone, they just lead him and his agent on until they got there and then promptly told them to fuck off. I mean, fine by me: Ruegger seems more hellbent on working on Freakazoid with his old team again more than being on Animaniacs anyways, and considering how well that TTG crossover episode was received: I wouldn't be surprised if a revival got greenlit within the next 2-3 years. Guy deserves another shot at being showrunner.

(Sidenote: if you wanna see if he's even still able to write clever jokes on his own, without the backing of the old team/TTG team, he's got a social media account where he sometimes post skits. YMMV on if you enjoy them or not, but it at least shows he hasn't gotten rusty.)

Cheese and fucking rice, they treated him the same way CN does Craig McCracken whenever a new (badly received) PPG project comes out! They want specific money, not all the money and sit there after getting a new season red-lighted asking "Did we fuck up? No. It's the audience who are wrong." What a screwy business. :heart-empty:

Suffice it to say, I already reported all this long, long ago. I am at the very least happy that the new show gets what the original was about (unlike the PPG reboot, the benchmark for shitty reboots), but I'm not watching it in part out of solidarity with the writers who weren't asked to come back. (The other part being I'm not going to get Hulu for this.)

If you are concerned, consider one of the roots of this - the very real problem of ageism in animation. Ageism that's largely driven by people at the top and not the crews, incidentally.

They only get it in the most basic sense I feel, since it rings so hollow in comparison to the original.

I wouldn’t say it’s entirely ageism per say but there is a bias in old vs new; even older things have to be done in the new way. A lot of these, I think, trace back to corporate greed, chasing trends (truer now than ever before), and a bit of nepotism. Not helping is the public’s unyielding support of these kinds of products, ensuring there’s always an audience.

Watched the full series on KimCartoon, and it's really is as bad/boring as they say, the Warner segments are the definite low lights of the show, but here's a more detailed observation of the series:, or at least the "highlights" for me:
- In this day and age, trying to make fun of diversity and genders is very tricky to do. The intro attempts it, but it makes it really hard to tell if they're taking the piss, or if the did it unironically so that no one bitches about them (yeah, not working...)
- Animation is tweened garbage outside of the bits done by Studio Yotta and TonicDNA, which comes off as wasted potential since it's a combined total of five minutes at most.
- Rob Paulsen's singing voice sounds dreadful, and I'm well aware he got throat cancer a few years back, but still.
- Second episode's last segment features what is probably the first real crossover of Waner Bros. and H-B characters beyond a quick gag. Probably the only thing I liked about that episode and it wasn't even a joke.
- Episode 5's Warner Segment has Chicken Boo in it pissed at how he's the worst character, so he disguises himself as a game hunter to take out the rest of the characters, probably the only Warners segment I liked really, even if I don't know how in the fuck he learned to talk in disguise which kind of killed it a bit.
- Pinky and the Brain segments are fine I guess, but the stiff and puppet-y animation is what ultimately kills them for me.
- The new exec is now /co/'s waifu of the week/month next to Anime Dot

So far the animaniacs reboot is ok but as it's been said poe's law has made it hard to tell if a joke on the shift from 98 to 2020 is takin the piss at something or is trying to recreate the the biting satire of the old show. Maybe it's just me and I've never cared for visuals but the animation is fine...idk in just seeing the "puppet" tweening you guys are again it could just be me being numb to visuals.


The song about reboots in episode 1 is probably the best example of is it a joke or is it serious. Because the song at times feels like it's trying to make fun of hollywood being dry for creativity but then you get lines like "just regurgitate it." That sound almost like they're trying to pull and hypnotize the viewer into accepting this is the animaiacs now.


6/10 not bad but probably would only rewatch when I'm bored/drunk of my ass

Haven't watched all of the episodes of the reboot yet. I will have to watch each episode one at a time because I have a busy schedule. So I will keep my piece until then.

Also I haven't seen anyone around here bringing this up. The person who is show running this reboot is Wellesley Wild. Before this reboot, he worked on Family Guy as a writer so take that what you will.

I was reading this interview with him and Gabe Swarr. I am gonna leave a link to that interview.

Ok so I watched a bit of the rebooted Animaniacs and hoo-boy is it bad. First off, the designs are kind of okay, right until they start moving and then the wheels fall off almost immediatly. As a poster above said it's mostly tweened shit with that really sterile flash look to everything and the humans especially looks wretched and don't seem to follow any cohesive style. Instead the randos looks like they're been plucked from a bunch of different failed pilots/webcomics and repurposed here.

The writing however is where the shit really starts to stink. To paraphrase the great Bill Watterson "good writing can always save poor artwork, but good artwork can never save poor writing", well here the artwork is poor and so is the writing, so at least they go together. None of the jokes really land but the show still seems very proud of itself for what I'm sure the millenial writers consider amazing satire. There's this aura of smugness emanating from the whole ordeal, like these people are recycling their own insipid twitter takes and trying to pass them off as clever writing. Also the characters referencing the fact that the writing is immediatly dated and shit doesn't make it any better, it just makes it worse.

The writers seem to be at least somewhat aware that what they're doing is bad and lazy but yet do not feel the need to rise above it and create something better. It's the classic irony poisoned millenial maneuvre where self-depreciation is passed off as clever meta-commentary to mask how lazy and unimaginative it really is. The songs suck too compared to the original and feel more like Family Guy -lite fare than the actually catchy and clever tunes of the original.

Sorry to distract everyone from questioning their post-Animaniacs sanity, but guess what was just confirmed to be dead despite various storyboarders leaving the project and the showrunner starting a new show on HBO Max.
That's right, ThunderCats Roar has finally been put to pasture by the network.
