I don't know enough about metal to judge the quality of the music itself, but I can't tell how much of the edgy personas they like to put on are for show or legit and intended to be taken seriously.

I grew up with metal and like it still, but most of it is absolute trash. I like to compare it to horror movies or the horror genre itself. First of all, it's a matter of taste and then there is some pretty high quality stuff. But the success of it made a bunch of cringe posers follow with low quality garbage, who also became at least mildly successful, which results in the current landscape of over 90% of it being low quality garbage.

The horror genre, instead of exploring ways to maximizing suspense and the drama of it, went to "more gore!" "more splatter!" "cooler monsters!" - result: torture-porn
The metal genre, instead of exploring different scales and ways to harmonize, went to "more double bass!" "more brutal!" "more growling!" - result: black metal / cannibal corpse etc.
Both genres just overall went to the lowest common denominator, which is why I stay away from metal-festivals and horror conventions.

Another issue with metal in general is the music videos. Even good bands have shitty/cringy music videos.
I'd say "holy wars" by megadeth is high quality, but the video is terrible cringe.

Black metal, as far as I know, actually started as satire. I might misremember this, but I think I read somewhere, that some band started to play, what is now known as black metal, as a joke to point out the shitty direction the genre is going. It's actually supposed to sound like shit. Didn't turn out too well.

Generally speaking, I think if you unironically think, that listening to tool or taylor swift is some kind of "warning sign" you overdosed on memes and should leave the house more often. Speaking of steampunk, I've never listened to Dr. Steel but his message of "You have to be able to make your own entertainment" is extremely important.
