What are some of your "warning sign" bands? - When you hear someone says they like X band then it's time to ask for the check.

I blame the downfall of breakcore on pedophiles (lolicore), FL Troonio, and people not willing to experiment enough.
We’re talking about a 30-year-old genre ostensibly based around a single drum sample. I cannot fathom what innovation could be squeezed from this stone.
Its mainly based on chopped up drum samples (with some exceptions, such as Shock Diamonds by Datach'i), but people get lazy which is why the amen break is used so much.

Burzum. Sign they're either a white supremacist nutjob or a pretentious metal autist trying to sound smart about music theory when there's plenty of non-psycho musicians they could spend their time listening to.

I love metal but I think the average metalhead probably belongs in an asylum.

Pantera: Pretty much the same as above, just 5-10 years younger (and kids may not be grown yet), less likely to be very online (but still can be), and more likely to have been arrested for something other than a DUI. Is either total white trash or Mexican. Would be a juggalo if he got into rap instead of metal.
They're also really touchy about Dime and Phil, and they love bringing up "how they saved metal in the 90s" (they didn't).

Acoustic Alchemy, Special EFX, The Rippingtons, Fattburger and other similar groups.

If they say they like these groups, then it is possible that they have an even more elevated taste in music than I do. My Ego cannot abide that. Big red flag.

Polyphia. Polyphia fans in some ways are like Dream Theater fans, in that they mistake musical complexity for emotional depth and will drag you into hours-long one-way conversations about guitar pedals. However, Polyphia fans are in other ways unlike Dream Theater fans, in that rather than overweight greasy neckbeards, they are femboy zoomer twinks in programmer socks who probably watch a lot of vTubers.

I never thought I'd head myself say it, but I'd rather spend time with Dream Theater fans.

Two more to add. Both bands are long dead now, but the absolute meatriding for both will never die.

Death fans, particularly those under the age of 25: Gen Z Death meatriders are the perfect storm of loud and obnoxious (including injecting discussion of Death and Chuck where it's not remotely relevant), dead celebrity-worshiping, snobby/pretentious, and completely ignorant of music history (they're completely and willfully ignorant of other bands that were just as influential on Death Metal and Prog Death as Chuck was). I love Death's music, but the obnoxious Zoomer fans online almost make me ashamed to say I do.

Necrophagist fans: Either an aging Millennial neckbeard and/or a Turk. Pretty much any discussion of Tech Death (and even some Prog Death discussions) will get derailed by Necrophagist circlejerking at some point. The "Necrophagist third album" wait jokes still get posted, despite becoming old and tired years ago. Also, any Tech Death that doesn't conform to the Necrophagist mold will be shit on by many of them, and they'll bitch if you say you want something different in the genre. Some get personally offended when you call Epitaph the death metal version of Yngwie Malmsteen's most self-indulgent wankery (which it absolutely is). Others will also get pissy if you imply that Necrophagist didn't invent the Tech Death subgenre and that bands like Demilich, Gorguts, Atheist, Cryptopsy, Suffocation, and Extol were playing it before them.

And not only were all those bands playing it years before Necrophagist, they didn't sacrifice good songwriting on the altar of soulless technical wankery. I remember listening to Epitaph for the first time about five years ago, and being baffled at all the hype it received. I found it pretty boring.

Tori Amos. She makes music for women with unresolved trauma, some of whom come with a side order of BPD. If you go out with one of these women, there's a non-zero chance she'll cry during sex at least once. Avoid.

hyper pop and fake punk like negative xp. If you're into "bands" that barely play shows and just put out music online it's an immediate sign of being a void.

Now if they like Void, they're cool.

  • Sabaton- Mapgame addicted turbo autist. Even split between Reddit-pilled tranny historian, neo-nazi sperg, or both at once. Will send you history memes unprompted and recount 12 hour strategy game matches despite no one asking.
  • Lady Gaga/Madonna- Similar enough fanbases that I'm lumping them together. Overwhelmingly the flamingest of gigafag homosexual men or hissing vicious faghags who bandy about the phrase "decent human being" like it gives a dopamine injection. Only real difference between the band demos will be age.
  • Pink Floyd- Superfans are fart huffing hipsters of the worst sort. If they proclaim The Wall is the greatest album of all time, they are guaranteed to have daddy issues.

• Warren Zevon: This is a very specific kind of boomer. Almost like the boomer version of a Rick and Morty fan. Fart-huffers with that obnoxious, cynical sense of humor that they think is unique. Often alocholics. Has an estranged daughter. (I occasionally enjoy Zevon, this is the only kind of listener you'll find.)
More Warren Zevon fan characteristics:

Hardcore Donald Trump fan. Also a fan of Ted Nugent. Listens to Scott Adams and likely Joe Rogan too. Claims to have been screwed out of a business/property deal/inheritance/job opportunity. Hates homos and troons, blacks and muslims. Loves Japan and Israel. Will openly attack and insult people who disapproves of Trump and/or Israel. Identifies as a "Christian" but never attends any sort of church services, because the churches are all infested with Liberals. Sticks to podcasts and YouTube videos. Tried to read the Bible but never got any further than the Pentateuch. Talks a lot about Satan and demons. Obsessed with old (30 years+) thrillers/action movies and capeshit comics.

Thats...an insane statement to make. I have been to a Dream Theater gig (went with a buddy so he didnt go on his own, because even his bird said the band was pure shit.). Its an experience you can get from just standing in front of your TV with a live DVD on, its really no different.
