Let's Sperg What are some video games that you completely changed your opinion on over time, or after trying them again?

So recently I've gotten into playing FH5. Now initially, I was exceptionally critical of FH4/5. I didn't like the setup of their career, didn't like the premise, didn't like how certain aspects work.

After taking a break from GT7 being a pos, I decided to give FH5 a second chance, really trying it this time.

And....I love it. This game is the loveletter to car culture that I've wanted for a long time. It has its issues and design choices I don't like. But so many parts of it are so well done and crafted with love that the smaller issues fade into the background or can be ignored. My opinion has flipped 180.

What experiences like this have you guys had? What games have you come back to after a long time, or tried with a new mindset, or other that completely changed your outlook on said game?

Bug Fables. It has a notoriously poor opening chapter(s). After getting through the first and like halfway through the second, I just dropped the game entirely. Came back after like a year and finished it, ended up absolutely loving the hell out of it and now it's probably in my top ten (twenty?). The first couple of chapters are still a drag, though.

Final Fantasy IX took a couple of years to grow on me. I still say the only good thing about it is the soundtrack, but I find it more endearing than I used to.

Was your change of heart for FH5 because of the weird features and limitations that GT7 had? I still don't understand how some GT fans still defend that game, despite it's terrible AI, the forced pushes for microtransactions, and UI annoyances such as being only able to purchase one part at a time. (while the Forza games allow you to pick out multiple parts, and then buy and install those parts all at once) Also, you can't undo certain car mods in GT7, i.e. the wide body mods.

World of Warships and War Thunder. I booted both of them up way back in college, the latter on PS4. Hated them from the instant I started. i don't know why. Now I don't play them a ton (I did play a ton of WoW at first, but moved on to other things, still play occasionally) but I have way more appreciation. WoW is great, sports-like (symmetrical team starts, one life, you take it seriously) naval action with carriers, subs, battleships. War Thunder tankery and planes are okay, more something to kill time with. But yeah, I appreciate them now.

But back then I also had a huge appetite for open world schlock, lot of samey stuff, and now I seem to much prefer militaria, sports, and simulations.

I think my change of heart was due to finally actually trying to get into the game instead of scratching at the surface, honestly. Once I got a feel for how everything worked, I was hooked. The moment that sold it for me was screaming down the highway at sunset as a storm came in.

You're entirely correct about GT7, sadly the fanbase won and the game is treated as more of marketing for a ps5 than anything. The game is literally one of the worst racing titles ever made and the fanbase defends it as some sort of amazing thing. They even brigade actual simracing groups about how their physics/cars/etc are worse than GT7 when they are objectively better. You'd think they're getting paid with how they act. Some of the arguments and ideas that are pushed are so fucking ridiculous and out of touch its almost comical

The issues with GT7 run far, far deeper than most realize and some of it is just insane

Dark souls 2.
Lets say I played it for few hours. Heard from friend how bad ds2 is and that I should play ds1. So I played it on PC. It was time before "remaster" and, becauce I didnt want spoilers I went into it blind, so I didnt learn about fact DS on pc was almost unplayable without dsfix mod. So after I somehow finished ds1 and came back to ds2. It was really pleasant experience in comparison .

The old mario rpg series. Was cleaning up a while back and stumbled on my old SNES and n64. I remembered the old RPGs being my favorites growing up and while they still have some charm to them they are just to simplistic for me to enjoy now.
