In limited use they have a potential minor medical benefit. However, any more than occasional use has 0 to potentially negative health benefit. If you have constipation that does not respond to anything else, or other treatments aren't an option, it's not a bad idea. Stick to OTC enemas, don't try to make your own. Making your own is an excellent way to actually damage and possibly perforate your colon if you use the wrong components or the wrong ratios. If you need to use them frequently, see a gastroenterologist, something more serious that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later may be going on. If you have to use them frequently there are several risks involved. Overuse can cause chronic irritation, leading to chronic inflammation, and potentially pathological changes to the mucosa of the rectum. Also, if one isn't following proper sterile procedure or tries to make their own enema solution (which should never be done), it is possible to introduce infectious microorganisms into the rectum and cause a serious infection. It is also possible to cause dysbiosis of the rectum with constant use which can lead to dysfunction.
For the TL;DR people, occasional use for constipation is okay. Stick to OTC preparations. Don't make your own. If you use it frequently you can potentially cause yourself major trouble.
