What Are The Worst Character Designs You Have Ever Seen?

Weird thing is that EVS was one of the writers who created Cruz

Jessica Cruz? So this push means they're handing royalties to reknowned comicsgate natsee @FROG, instead of coming up with another, woker female GL to promote?

The redesign is ugly, but apparently a little less spiteful than I would have thought.

No royalties for me. She's a derivative of GREEN LANTERN, so DC gave me about five or ten grand and said "thanks very much."

Atelier Sophie has the titular alchemist start with a pretty well designed and recognizable big coat into having this godawful yellow garb 2/3 of the way into the game, with the main issue being the colors not working well and it being very boring Magical Girl esque. Luckily the sequels got the coat back (in new colors!).

The second main character Plachta's design isn't much better with too much holes in the clothing, like the designers weren't sure what she should wear so they settled on having the skeletons to most piece of clothing instead.

Somehow, the weirdest thing is that she's got matching corsets everywhere except the one body part where a corset is supposed to be.

I wouldn't call Sophie's design bad, it is not offensive to the eyes and the white, yellow with small red highlights is nice. I could even imagine a very skilled cosplayer pulling it off. It is rather on point with the series it represents.

As for Platcha's design, yeah, it is bad for what it is trying to communicate, other than the grimoire, there is nothing to it that says that she's a magician, She's just wearing lingerie with extra steps.

This is gabi from that one netflix movie named “vivo”.

I fucking hate this chick’s design. The clothes, the hair…everything. Its just so fucking unappealing to look at.
It's just a hodgepodge of different eras of counterculture mixed in a blender and served up on a silver plate of hipster.

Reminds me of a less anthropomorphic version of the Lips enemy from the Dragon Quest series. I wouldn't say Lips is bad, per se, but I don't dig it. DQ in general has some absolutely bizarre designs, but the bizarreness is so frequent that nothing seems out of place.

Usually with DQ, Horii draws an uninspired idea for a monster then Toriyama takes it and adds his own spin. For what it is, he is extremely creative with it.

However some times his own personal choices have been a bit more unfortunate..

Not the worst design in Dragon Quest, a lot of modern stuff without Toriyama's help has gotten very generic, but this is a quite funny design of his.

What was wrong with just the rainbow? This is just tacky.
It's not quirky and special enough. Deliberately missing the point of the rainbow means you can now virtue-signal about all the different social issues at the same time. I honestly don't understand why some people bitch about their flag colours being "under-represented" during pride month, like have you SEEN what these companies will do with it?

Well, sometimes it's not even companies. These are from Etsy.

I've gotta say, gathering fruit for the thread was a fun trip down memory lane. Listing these in order from "just kind of meh" to "burn it and salt the earth."

Also apologies if the image sizing is weird. I'm on mobile again.

Jill doesn't look bad here, but I always thought this design looked more like an NPC than a main character. It's also not practical for zombie killing. Ordinarily that's fine, RE isn't exactly the pinnacle of realism, but since they went for an understated look it just feels odd.

The original anime is nostalgic for me so this entry hurts.

I know gacha is an easy target, but Magia Record's designs usually aren't bad. These two, however, are ridiculous. Why is the orange girl wearing two entirely different outfits at once? Why panties over a full body suit? Why does she have twintails and a ponytail? It looks like it can't decide whether it wants to be streamlimed or frilly. Also, her backstory is that she wished for her divorced parents to get back together, which backfired, and she copes with it via a hiking hobby. Absolutely none of that is reflected in her visuals.

As for girl 2: sexualised clown pants. Sexualised. Clown. Pants. Plus her important life-giving Soul Gem is on her crotch. What a waste of a good colour palette.

Nobody else in the anime or manga is drawn like this. What part of "motherly figure who cares for orphans" means "give this character a big bobblehead"? She's also involved in serious, gritty scenes, which even as a kid was hilarious to watch.

And finally, this creepy little bastard.

UGH.

What the actual fuck is going on with this man?! That gimp mask is some serial killer shit, and the worst part is that it doesn't stop there. Everyone mentions how creepy Tingle was, but the real villain was here all along. Literally - this guy runs a rabbit sanctuary and has some questionable dialogue to say the least. Those poor bunnies probably long for the day a fox breaks in to put them out of their misery.
Doesn't the rabbit guy have a wife who complains about him taking care of rabbits instead of coming home?

You haven't posted the worst one.
oh my god what is wrong with your faaaace.png

Speaking of gatcha shit, I can never stand "chibi" or SD characters during the battle sequence. It gets bad when they do their special move, where they try to make it look cool but it ends up being retarded because they're chibis.
my own clone, now neither of us are virgins.jpg
Even though FGO uses the same tweening/paper mario animation, at least it gets it right by making the character proportional during battle.

Christ, what happened to the art direction? I loved how unique the original artwork from the anime was, now it's all over the place. Just look at her eyes, they're way too big and there's no whites in them. Guess Puella Magi Madoka Magica really should've stopped at Rebellion if they were going to take the series into this direction.

It's a gatcha cashgrab so they probably did the thing where they hired different artists to cut time. Madoka was suppose to be a one-off series so the character designs were centered around one color. Even Homura had subtle purples in her dress as her signature color. But now nu-meduka characters doesn't really follow that rule and the character designs feel like they're some OC do not steal instead of legitimate characters.

And I agree, Rebellion was tolerable (even if some scenes felt like forced fanservice bait) and I just pretend Magia Record doesn't exist.

It reminds me of the Oni from Ao Oni

Remember this masked magical girl from Magia Record I posted awhile back?
868px-Corbeau.png
Her name is Corbeau. It turns out she and a handful of other Magia Record characters originated from the spinoff manga, in which there are four of them. She comes from Puella Magi Tart Magica: The Legend of "Jeanne d'Arc" specifically. Corbeau and three other girls, Lupin, Minou and Isabeau, are the antagonists of said manga. Unsurprisingly, their designs are also boring.

They're all supposed to be sisters, too. Take a guess as to which one's the oldest of the three.
It's Lupin.
