What Are The Worst Character Designs You Have Ever Seen?

Sorry to dredge up an older post (and an older meme), but seeing this from page 14:

..reminded me of this:

As for shitty character designs, I vote for the White Witch from the movie version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe:

I get they were trying to do something different, but icicle horns growing from a head full of dreadlocks? An evening gown made from an ombre-dyed shag carpet? A cape that looks like it was made from scraps out of the box of dirty fur remnants that you find in the back of a leather goods store? Pink skin? Who the hell okayed this design? This doesn't remotely look like something anyone from a Northern clime would wear. Even an immortal witch who isn't affected by the cold wouldn't be caught dead in this.

Compare that design to the lower budget BBC TV version of "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe":

Now THAT'S a witch who knows how to dress for the weather. Her hair has a medieval/Nordic influence and her skin is suitably pale for a cold-hearted villain. You may be a costume designer who wants to do something different, but sometimes it pays to be traditional. Putting Batman in a bright red union suit and domino mask would be a bold design choice for the character, but that doesn't mean it would suit him.

Now that you’ve brought it up I feel unsure about the Queen’s design. There’s something I like about the otherworldly and ugly look to her costume design. They probably gave her an ugly dress and hair to make it more obvious how evil she is? That BBC design for her looks a lot better in comparison. She is meant to be otherworldly and beautiful to highlight how evil and cold she is.

Deadlocks and icicles don't look otherworldly. They look like an inexperienced costume designer trying way too hard to make a memorable look. Even the witch's design from the 1970's cartoon version looks better than Disney's version, and the cartoon is a notorious piece of utter shite:

I'm fairly sure, looking at this picture, that if I ever came across this person, I would know that she was a queen with magical ice powers. If I came across the Disney version, I would think that she was some kind of deranged college art professor who needed to put a costume together at the last minute and just grabbed whatever was handy, stitched it into something wearable, and spraypainted it. Then grabbed some icicles from the garage and stuck them into her hair for good measure.

I dislike how cookie-cutter these Strawberry Shortcake character designs are.

And I've just learned that there is yet another Strawberry Shortcake reboot, released not long ago. They resemble even less of their namesakes than before. If I wasn't informed that these were supposed to be Strawberry Shortcake and her friends, then I'd be none the wiser.

Compare these to previous incarnations of the franchise:

(Sorry if the image above is kinda crappy -- it wasn't easy finding an ensemble pic in good quality.) Although I didn't exactly grow up with any incarnations of Strawberry Shortcake, I adore the original 1980s version.

While the 2000s version isn't my favorite, it still has good variety in character design. (Although I don't like the fact that Huckleberry Pie, the token male character, looks rather generic here.)

Just for the hell of it, here's a chart documenting Strawberry Shortcake herself over the years.

Wrong, Captain Corndog (or whatever his name is) is the only remotely well-designed character in that mess of a webcomic.

The new Strawberry Shortcake designs look more like the Sugar Rush racers from Wreck-It Ralph.

That's exactly what I thought.

Nothing beats the 1980's original. I felt the strength of that version was simply going for traditional small town values the way the characters looked and dressed.

The 2003 version is a personal favorite but I’m nostalgia-biased. The designs feel fitting and cute. I can still smell the scented DVDs. Blueberry Muffin and the mermaid chick were personal favorites of my eight year old self.

didn’t think I’d be talking about Strawberry Shortcake today but there we go.

I originally liked the look of the 1980's Strawberry Shortcake, as it emulated a lot of "folk style" 70's art characters like Holly Hobby. Good, wholesome fun. But what ruined the Strawberry Shortcake aesthetic for me was the series Small Wonder, which starred a creepy girl robot character who had an almost identical outfit.

I ended up in possession of a Holly Hobbie book as a boy, thanks to my garage sale-haunting grandmother. I remember finding it somewhat confusing due to the inclusion of time-travel and a mysterious Aztec pyramid as plot-points. 🤔

I can’t tell if her outfit had white stripes or a lot of belts. What’s the point of the visor anyways? Plus we already have 3 and a half minority green lanterns so what’s the point.
