I think I'm heading towards the climax of the game. I got the full version of the Ichirus Key so I can warp to any area I want. Yay.
So far, the game has been quite a ride. Maybe because so far the story in this one feels more emotionally investing than the other King's Field games. There's something a bit sad about being a character who has been raised and trained to one day kill his own father. (Who was the protagonist in the very first King's Field game I believe.)
What made me even sadder was the whole thing with Lyn. She was probably one of the few characters I've met in a King's Field game, or even any FromSoft game I played, that had a personal history and attachment to the MC. Everyone else I've encountered in a FromSoft game I felt I was simply a witness to their actions, their development, and usually to their demise. Which isn't a knock against FromSoft, that was just how their games were.
So after talking with her in the snow area, going back to her house, and picking up her staff. I returned to find the snow monsters replaced by those lizard monsters mentioned earlier. Realizing what this could possibly mean, I ran back to the house she was in and found a note from her that said she went to the Garan area to find her father and find me the Ichirus Crown.
I went into the Garan area, slaughtering any enemy that stood in my way. Only to find Lyn lying dead outside a cave. Part of me knew something like this was going to happen, as FromSoft isn't afraid to kill off characters you grow to like. (Solaire and Siegmeyer for example) But I guess I really got into the role as Prince Lyle as I was saddened to see her dead. I got angry and took it out on the lizard monsters in the cave. I got the crown she was after and felt even worse about the whole thing.
Later on, while I was waiting for Leon to piece together the Ichirus Key, I talked to one of the NPC's in town. He talked about how as a kid, the MC talked about how he was going to marry Lyn when they got older, which put me on the verge of tears.
At that point, all I could do in her memory was to kill the King and bring peace back to Verdite. Hopefully the ring she left behind will help.
So yeah, this whole thing is kind of a testament to how well FromSoft handles its story telling, characters, and world building. Maybe because she was a childhood friend, maybe because she was one of the only people who saw you as more than just the guy who's supposed to save everyone, maybe it's because I'm able to project some of my personality onto my character and make the journey feel more personal, but the whole thing with Lyn felt genuine and is making my experience with this game that much more enjoyable.
I WANT to restore Verdite now. I WANT to knock the King down a peg. When a game actually gets me to care that much about what's going on, I feel it has succeeded in a big way for me.
