What are you reading right now?

  • 🔧 At about Midnight EST I am going to completely fuck up the site trying to fix something.
I just wrapped up Gibson’s sprawl trilogy + the second novel of the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy Broken Angels. I am now reading Woken Furies. Somewhat returns to the original cyberpunk noir feel of Altered Carbon with military sci fi elements. Interesting so far

If you liked Morgan's Altered Carbon stuff, check out his book Thirteen. I thought it was pretty interesting and had a cool premise. Don't look into his fantasy series, however. Let's just say he wanted to subvert convention with the main character.

I've not had too much luck reading Lovecraft personally, as I find them very dry in prose. I think that they're one of the few works that are improved by being in audio form, and they were excellent for when I was at work.
The voices in my head prove their usefulness when I need a change of narration.

I was reading (and in the end dropped) "The prize" by Daniel Yergin.
It's a very in depth semi-pop-history book about the history of the oil industry.
It's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness: because it is so in depth it is also rather repetitive at times and the prose could have been cleaned up here and there.
I just got tired of it, reading felt more like a chore than an enjoyment at times.

I'll be reading "always with honor" from Wrangel or the Tao Te Ching next.

Just finished Lolth's Warrior by R.A. Salvatore, book 39(!) of the Drizzt Saga. It ended up being way better than I expected. The only thing that has kept me going on the series are the side characters. They actually have more pages than the "main character" at this point.

Not sure what I want to read next. Maybe some writing craft books. I have The Anatomy of Story by John Truby that I bought a year ago but haven't dipped into it yet.

The manga series Blood on the Tracks (Chi no Wadachi).

I'm creeped the fuck out. I don't recommend it to anyone who has suffered at the hands of a narcissist or a sociopath. The close-up face panels, depiction of childhood trauma and mental illness, and seemingly ordinary slice-of-life facade, will make your flesh crawl.

Just finished first book on New Sun books. It read nice, I get why people like it's world-building. Surprisingly for me not that much happened. Is there someone who read all of them? Is it worth to finish them all?

I'll probably go with I am Legend next.
I went through a spell of reading the books movies were based on and "I Am Legend" is great but you can throw out what you know from the movie. "Forrest Gump" is also worth reading and is an expanded version of the film. You get a lot more of Forrest's internal monologue.
"I might be retarded but I ain't stupid". I know this feel

I just finished Blood meridian and The Road and they were just as brilliant as everyone made them out to be. Mccarthy's prose is amazing and he really captures the sheer terror of living in an apocalyptic world with no hope and describing the savagery of the American West in the mid 19th century. I might read No Country for Old Men next but which of his other books are classics?

I'll be honest, even pushing the typical "lol, manga and anime gay" shtick, this specifically was really autistic.

In spite of my banner image and shitposts, I don't actually read a lot of manga or watch much anime. If I get into one, it's usually because it had a selling point that piqued my curiosity.

I enjoy a good mindfuck story, but I was not expecting how intense and personal it is. It's written and illustrated well, but the only story Shuzo Oshimi is capable of writing is quasi-autobiographical TMI trauma-dumps.

Steer clear. This fucker has mommy issues.
