What do you know about Hegel?

I couldn’t understand anything he was saying even when I read along with that youtube series with the neckbeard who has the greasy ponytail and I’m pretty sure it’s a bunch of pseud bait for exactly that phenotype, but there was one section where Hegel says something like “not ecstasy, but the notion” which I also didn’t understand but something about it has actually stuck with me and become a central tenet of my life. In my inability to penetrate what he was actually saying I basically read it like obscurantist poetry and gave it my own meaning, which is essentially not emotion, but the truth. In life we’re very vulnerable to being influenced by things like dopamine rushes, ego fulfillment, fear, various biases, but there’s a truth to every situation behind all that which we should try to see as is. So I find myself frequently repeating that dumb phrase to myself, Not ecstasy, but not the notion!

He was a philosopher of history, ideas come together and allow for the collective human consciousness to come to a new understanding of the world and progress, this talk of the spirit is idealism. Marx took this and said that this actually is a product of material reality and affects material reality and thats where materialism comes from and Marx's theory of history etc.
