What do you think about the discourage feature? - Old anti-trolling measure.

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Seems like a solution in search of a problem.
The gay triangle already does through communal policing what the discourage function would do via administrative power.

It's not a bad idea if you're dealing with someone who makes a lot of sock puppets. They'll come back in five minutes with a new account if there's a ban, but if their experience using the site is frustrating and time-consuming, they'll move on on their own.

You just have to be careful that the changes aren't so extreme that they'll pick up on what's happened, and mods have to shut the fuck up about the feature so that users don't freak out every time an image doesn't load.

This is akin to shadowbanning. Those who are smart enough will see through it. Sort of like how Youtube will lie and sometimes say "This video is unavailable" when it detects a user with an adblocker or VPN.

Null used to do that every time any sort of forum culture started emerging here. I don't remember exactly when the autocorrects on "milk", "ween", "Great Director Chandler" (!!), and others were removed.
" 2025-06-25 01_35_08-Bits N Scraps - PC.odt — LibreOffice Writer.webp" is still censored. Back in 2014, there were more joke ones like "metal" being \METAL/ and a few others I forgot. There's another one that corrects to "/cuteboys/" but I forgot it what it was.

I’m pretty sure it was used here on occasion long long ago when the place was still CWCki Forums, there were unwelcome retards that would complain of suffering from similar things after managing to do something to upset staff but everyone thought it was just their ISP throttling them.

It's pretty much useless honestly.
1. it relies on someone using an account
2. you have to apply it to the account to take effect
Now, if you ban someone on XenForo, these two requirements have to be met, and XF will lock the account out of absolutely everything, including the logout button. Then you have to delete the cookies to be able to see the front page, and you'd be back to square one either way. Except with a ban, you send a clear signal to fuck off, and with this "discouragement" you're still going to have the most stubborn cuntwits shitting up the site. Just look at 4chan and how much all the captcha BS helped to slow down schizos. Some people are that determined to make online spaces unusable to others.
