What DVDs had the most interesting packaging?

The original Extended Edition DVD releases of Lord of the Rings were pretty great:

One could get just the discs (there were 4 or 5 per movie), or you could get the movie with some tchotchke:

Similarly, the later released Harry Potter Ultimate Edition Line:

These really felt like they were works of love, even without some of the physical extras. Well-curated copies of the films, with extra bits, lots of extras that were well-produced, just great.
Yea I remember that Return of the King set being over $100 by itself. Lord of the Rings is like the Skyrim of DVD releases.

I think Memento's limited edition DVD set is really cool and on theme. The package is like a medical file.

The menu is also cool as hell. You gotta work through the menu as if you have short term memory loss. You can also solve a puzzle if you want to watch the movie in chronological order.

My copy of King Kong came in this case.

It's too big to put on the shelf so it sits on the top of it. I do like how it looks.

I also got the big box of Dark Shadows.

On a side note, that Evil Dead set was also kind of infamous in that they promised up and down that they would have the rare as fuck, holy grail of Evil Dead media, the home movie version of Evil Dead called "Within the Woods" that Raimi and Campbell made that eventually got seen by the people who financed Evil Dead 1 and got them the money to make the movie.

When it came out, the movie was MIA and it turned out that the people making the DVD had lied but kept telling people it was going to be included to trick people into (by that point) re-buying the film.

I keep telling myself one day I'm going to buy that box set and watch Dark Shadows from start to finish at long last.

I could have sworn it's on the booklet in mine. I'll have to go look. I just don't like touching the case because the shitty and probably toxic foam is 17 years old and crumbles every time it's touched.

You're in for a ride it's over 1000 episodes. I'm on my second watch through.
I have this box set as well. Used to be the kind of guy who did the whole “I’m never gonna watch a soap!” routine but Dark Shadows is such a wonderful campy fever dream mess that it’s enjoyable as hell.

Tax: kinda routine but the blood bag dvd case for Ichi the Killer was kinda cool. Was a bitch trying to slip the actual dvd out though

I've seen chunks of the show (mainly during summer vacations when the show aired on Sci-Fi Channel in the 90s). But I've still not managed to complete Mary Hartman Mary Hartman (325 episodes) and Dark Shadows isn't like say Family Guy or X-Files or Law and Order or Power Rangers or Simpsons, where it's easy to pick and chose episodes to watch at random if the mood strikes. I'd have to dedicate a good chunk of a year to get through it, especially the first 209 episodes before Barnabas shows up.

Speaking of Anchor Bay, their tin case release of Repo Man was really neat when it first came out and it included the CD soundtrack. This version of the film retains Iggy's vocals during the opening credits:

The company that transferred the episodes to DVD did a good job and the set comes with a lot of interviews with the cast talking about the making of the show, like how most of the time they only had a day to memorize their lines. The little booklet it comes with is a good way to keep track of what episode you're one, a few of them are of poor quality because the master tapes where badly damaged they give a warning before the damaged episode but it was the best they could do. It's the same company that also restored all the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes movies.

I used to watch it with my mom in the 90s on Sci Fi too, she had watched in the 60s when if first aired and was a big fan.

Anchor Bay had a thing for tin sets back around 99/2000 and did that for several movies including Fulci's The Beyond and Evil Dead 2. The tins didn't sell very well and you could grab them for about $15 at Best Buy. Then a few years later they became en vogue and I think I sold my The Beyond one (because I had to) for about $100.

While not as cool as the Ichi dvd, Cat Soup had a similar gimmick for the DVD. Unfortunately they only used a small amount of slime for the cover:

I've only seen the Depp movie ( and didn't hate it honestly ). I wanted to try to get into the show but when I found out it was over 1000 episodes it just killed my enthusiasm. I didn't want to devote that much time to one series.
