What exactly did Richard Nixon do that was wrong?

tbh wiretapping the democrats was probably justifiable- nixon fucked up by lying about it and trying to cover it up.

but that shit is kindergarten hijinx compared to what came after, no question.

Vietnam was a perpetual shitshow that the top brass had their head to far up their own asses to see that the american people were getting pissed off with the war, doesnt help that south vietnam was a completely worthless state on the same level as the government we left in afganistan before the taliban just walked in and took control.
The top brass was more or less against the vietnam war because they knew they couldnt win it. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigma_war_games

China is easy to justify in my opinion since it was an excellent geopolitical move at the time, Im sure nixon wasnt expecting several presidents in an unbroken line to deindustrialize the US and feed china into becoming the demon it is today,

I don't deny that in context, it made sense because the mainland could only be suppressed for so long on the global stage. What *I* take issue with is that there was such a glaring lack of foresight on the part of the Nixon administration for even bothering to engage with the communists when Mao himself was already on his way out.

The fact that Nixon was able to meet with Mao and thus, was able to grant Chairman Mao one final act of legitimacy before his death is what burns my ass the most about this whole situation. Keep in mind that Mao completely discredited himself twice with the Great Leap Forward and the then-concurrent Cultural Revolution. Had Mao died without establishing formal diplomatic relations with the US, he would've been memoryholed from the Chinese collective subconscious in a vein similar to Joseph Stalin (that is to say: he wouldn't be vindicated).

That was what was so insane about the whole thing. If Nixon had just said that he authorized surveillance of the Democrats because he was so worried about the possibility of a barely-disguised commie like George McGovern getting into power, but that the people he entrusted the task to had exceeded their authority and would be punished accordingly, then he'd probably have had a good chance of surviving the scandal, even if he ended up limping on as a lame duck for the rest of his second term.

The thing with Watergate is Nixon didn't know about. He's on tape asking "What asshole ordered that?"
Watergate was even dumber than most people realize. A few people noticed a large amount of...ladies of negotiable affection were going in and out of that hotel during the DNC and those brainlets decided to tap a phone to try to catch someone ordering whores.
As for the hate, Nixon was always accused of bribery, and various dirty tricks. Much the same as any politician. But a lot of it started with the House Committee on Un-American Activities and his anti-communist stances.
But what sank him with Watergate was all his tapes coming out. Turns out that Nixon had the 70's equivalent of mean tweets and showed that he was in fact a normal man who swore all the time. American's didn't like the peel back of the presidential facade.

he didnt come to my 6th birthday party when i invited him and i will never forgive him for that. sure he died in 1994 and i wasnt born until 1998 but that doesnt mean he couldnt show up to my birthday party dammit

I won't lie, it is refreshing seeing Trump haters who aren't SJW faggots.
We're out there. As usual, we get drowned out since the bulk of the left is fucking retarded....

I think Nixon is the first milestone for the government getting completely out of hand and corrupt. Probably also had his dirty laundry aired out at a time when anti government sentiment was high and mass media was becoming more efficient. He's certainly not the first corrupt president, he's the first one who's scandals dominated the news cycles.

It's almost quaint. A little mid century wiretapping blew right up meanwhile occult pedophile islands barely even register.
