What exactly is the thought process behind identifying as nonbinary?

I never really thought that deeply about people who call themselves nonbinary, but I've been wondering exactly how these people come to the conclusion that they're nonbinary. In their minds, what is it that makes them nonbinary?

I feel like "I don't act like a man or woman" is just too obvious and refutable. They MUST be performing some other mental gymnastics.

Late and gay, and others have already pretty much said it, but this is the image macro explanation -

"Troons are people who don't feel like they're the sex they're born as and feel like they're the opposite sex"

Because society has adopted the above premise in the name of acceptance they've unwittingly accepted the premise "sex has some sort of innate feeling" when it doesn't. When autistic people encounter the 2nd premise rather than recognizing it as a bullshit idea they become non-binary.

it's an attempt to achieve maximum specialness, appear unique, and gain attention
Of course that's why they do it, but I really want to know how they could possibly justify it with anything other than not acting like a man or a woman. It just does not seem possible.

Ok I'm probably going to get shit on for this but this is a serious answer. Theres a few different reasons as to why somebody would identify as non-binary. For my first answer it's one that's already been said: Because people want to be special. No need to explain that one. For my second answer: People who do not feel comfortable being seen as either a man or a woman. This one is the most common one among the older "more sane" folk and as some have pointed out, can also be attributed to autism and not understanding that the world isn't black and white, but can also legitimately be because of, as said before, seen as either of the sexes. The third one and I believe the one behind the xenogenders: Trannies (or cis people mistaking their gender non-conforming as such) who are confused and do not understand themselves really, this happens with the "more sane" teens.
