What exactly was gamergate, and what side should i be on?

Please explain like I'm a tard (because I am). What did each side want? What was the main objective? The only explanations I can find are extremely biased to either side and I don't really want to believe either.

4. Some video game news outlets start publishing articles about how the conventional "gamer" population is essentially dead as a consumer base and that games should focus more on broadening their appeal and social justice shit.
5. Gamers start boycotting these outlets and emailing advertisers to stop doing business with them.
6. Some whores and trannys jump on the opportunity to participate in the Oppression Olympics for griftbux.
7. "Skeptic" YouTubers throw their two cents in, many starting their careers on the momentum of this alone.
8. 4chan and Reddit jannies censor discussion about it, resulting in 8chan's rise in popularity.
9. Law & Order makes an episode about it for some reason.
10. Eventually fizzles out after everyone involved gets the message that very few people even know any of this is happening and only a small minority of people who do know actually give a shit.

There's more to it that I kinda glossed over but honestly, I probably could have made the list half as long and you'd get the idea how gay it all was.
