I used to enjoy Stardew Valley but I have grown to resent it over the years because of its borderline cult like fanbase. They treat the game and its creator like Jesus and if you’re a part of the farming sim/cozy game community they’re difficult to avoid because they won’t shut the fuck up about how they think it’s the best game in the genre. Lots of them look down on other farming sims or refuse to play them if they don’t play exactly like Stardew. Also the fanbase is full of sjws who make diversity mods and get mad at the creator over every little offensive thing they can find in the game but they’re a lot easier to avoid than the rabid fanboys.

That and the "IT'S HECKING WHOLESOME!" claim they make. No it's not. You have gay marriage, it's not wholesome, and I'm sure there are a bevy of LGBTQ+++++ mods that are fully endorsed by the community...yet Jas mods are condemned.

On the topic of worst fanbase? Bungie, Destiny goysloppers in particular. "BUT THE LORE~" they say, while the actual plot of the game is so cartoonishly black and white it makes Star Wars look like fucking Byron.

The Gran Turismo fanbase always had some sort of elitist and stuck-up feeling to them, as the hardcore fans revere GT over any other racing game, trash talk other racing games for being inferior (even if GT has those said same things that they trash talk about), and some go as far as even revering the director (Kazunori Yamauchi) as a God. It also seems like the snobbery that Sony fans have, adds on to how GT fans behave. The GT fanbase even rivals Sim Racing fans, in terms of the sheer levels of over-dedication to their favorite game.

Other racing games don't go as far regarding the snobbery, for some reason.

Blood Omen 2 is one of those rare times where a remake would probably vindicate it, especially if they did a FF7R-like redo combining it with Blood Omen into one game to bring everything into sync (like Umah, Sebastian and co’s betrayal being more impactful as they’re all Literally Who’s, events from Defiance being implied).

(Also remove the pedophilic Elzevir quest in BO1 given the writer, Ken McCulloch, was later revealed to be a major chomo.)

I mean, you’d be polishing a turd otherwise but there’s some stuff worth salvaging in Blood Omen 2.

But there was nothing worth rescuing in Dead Sun and that got a mercy abortion. Sad thing is Legacy of Kain fans were so desperate for new content some of them would’ve gladly eat literal shit (Dead Sun) than have some standards for a new game, but I digress.

Nothing really worth rescuing in the cut content of soul reaver either but they’re too pretentious and ignorant to care about the reasons why all of that was cut or reworked in the day and age of live service “games.” The commentator is pretty good as far as niche fanbases are concerned and isn’t afraid to let the gameplay speak for itself.

Cozy games and farming sims attract almost entirely women and the lgbt community. I noticed that the most toxic gaming fandoms I’ve encountered were ran almost exclusively by those groups. Also cozy games attract really crazy sjws who only care about how progressive a game is. I still remember them melting down when Rune Factory 5 didn’t have gay marriage when it first came out. I've been watching a small YT creator recently who has been posting edits of revisiting solo playthroughs a few of the Colonization spin-offs of the Civilization series.

The dude is pretty chill and knows the mechanics of archaic games pretty well.

But randomly in the videos, he announces "I don't support slaughter of the American Indians" before he attacks a settlement or "My criticism of this game is that the downsides of slavery aren't obvious enough".

It used to be kind of a charming meme that the games were so unforgiving, but now you have people analyzing how deep and thoughtful the games are, and taking everything so fucking seriously, it's so annoying. The games aren't niche anymore, they have one predictable kind of difficulty that anyone can learn, and with souls-like becoming more a genre, it means they won't be special anymore either. Animal Crossing fandom started going off the rails with New Leaf, given the popularity of the 3DS. To the surprise of no one reading this, that was also the game that introduced Isabel (and actual best girl Lottie in its spin-off, Happy Home Academy, but the plebs have no taste)

To be frank, Soul Reaver and onward are pretty damn homoerotic to begin with, even if Amy Hennig never intended them to be, so it doesn't surprise me in the slightest, but to save my love for the games I don't interact with other fans at all. Probably why I've enjoyed it for as long as I have while others have sent me running for the hills.

Mass Effect 3, full stop. The drama over the ending alone was the beginning of the end of BioWare as anyone knew it, and between bomb threats, scores of R/G/B frosted cupcakes being sent to their Edmonton bosses, and then some hamfisted DLC that felt more like terrible fan fiction (Citadel DLC), I don't blame anyone for shitting all over the series after that digital abortion.

Which is a shame, because ME: Andromeda had legitimate promise but it needed some personnel changes and a lot more time in the oven to be even as good as Mass Effect 2, and it got neither and then some.

The only redeeming part of ME3 was the co-op PvE multiplayer. But yeah it was definitely the beginning of the end.

The later Legacy of Kain games are good for learning about modern usages of Shakespearian writing and mostly consistent worldbuilding. Though after playing through blood omen I have no idea how Kain forgot where the heart of darkness was by the time of Defiance. When he wouldn't shut the fuck up about it being in his chest in Blood omen. Amy Hening clearly didn't write blood omen or even get a short summary of it from anyone.
