What Happened to RealVideo?

For anyone that is sitting on old RealMedia files, they can be recompressed @CRF22 to MP4 in tens of seconds using Handbrake(just drag and drop into it, then hit Start Encode, that's all you have to do). I dug up some old files and tested it and they re-encoded at a 1000fps average and I ended up with a much smaller filesize at the same quality.

Handbrake is a revolutionary tool. Before, it was a fucking hassle to convert stuff
It is important to know, for some of us turbo-nerds, that Handbrake is built upon FFMPEG. So it converts GIF into MP4 as well, just drag and drop!

There is also a thread for FFMPEG, useful for those that wants to understand more or do things like split video from audio or vice-versa into separate containers without changing any of the data.

I remember watching a lot of pirated shit on Real Player back in the day, because it compressed an episode of a TV show to like 20 megabytes. Check out this archived version of mrtwig.net. Everyone used to get South park episodes there, and most of the downloads were in RM format because it kept download sizes so much smaller. It was absolute fucking potato quality though.

I always assumed RealPlayer got fully assimilated to Rhapsody in the mid 00s and languished ever since.

Realplayer doesn't buffer, if you bad internet connection, If you have VLC player, your Realmedia files won't buffer.
Terrible piece of software for a terrible codec. The passing of either will never be mourned by anyone sane.

IRYO on this codec, But it's a file format, IMO, RealPlayer is a okay software, RealVideo is okay file format/codec too, not great as MPEG, MOV and AVI. RealPlayer has gotten much better over the years, I mean their player doesn't really buffer if anyone had used in the mid 1990's to mid 2000's. RealVideo is obsolete nowadays as of 2006 or 2007 due to DivX being more popular.

RealPlayer was actually illegal in Catholic countries like Poland and the Philippines because it was gay and made anyone who used it into a gigantic faggot.
I don't ordinarily wish I lived in a Catholic country, but I concede there were some upsides.
The reason why they banned RealPlayer is because it was a bad player and the videos made in the .rm format was bad due to the files not working and low picture quality.

What's the fucking point?
MP4 has a much smaller file size than GIF.
Yeah, but you need a bit of juice to run H265. H264 runs on a potato and that is enough to reach most people including normies with low end office-grade equipment.

Streaming codecs are also up there.
I can play 1080 H265 just fine on a 3rd generation i5 laptop, although it doesn't leave much overhead for other tasks. What I have found is that VLC is much more CPU efficient at playing all types of video when compared to web browsers including Firefox and Chromium.
