What Have You Cooked Recently?

Managed to make some cheesy eggs. I've been using a bit more cream when I put the eggs on and it makes both the eggs and the cheese runnier. I'd been trying to imitate the way my local Waffle House does it, and I think I finally got it down pat. V proud of myself.

Eggs are great with cheese I think. I tried my hand at making myself an omelette for breakfast today with a tiny bit of milk and two eggs, stuffed with cheddar, diced ham, and just a bit of black garlic Carolina reaper sauce. Came out pretty tasty, melted in the mouth

Usually I avoid deep frying stuff, but I really wanted to make myself some chicken tenders with honey mustard sauce. I was using these two videos as recipe:

Turned out pretty well if I do say so myself. The one thing I've changed about the recipe was adding a little nutmeg and cumin into my flour mix. While eating it I was listening to tendie stories read by Sweenerbuttz:

Gotta say, the experience was quite (meme) magical.

Baked some brownies last night. Not from scratch but they still turned out pretty good.

Got a 12 pack of Aldi tangerine fake LaCroix and a big cheapish steak.
Just salt and pepper, ended up around medium. Worked for what I wanted

I've making creamy tomato soup for the past couple of weeks since it's that time of year, I dislike using canned tomatoes but past experiences have taught me that it's a pain to skin 'em.

That said this batch came out better than previous batches, I used San Marzano tomatoes over plum tomatoes and I used a nice unsalted artisan butter/olive oil combo over only using olive oil. A friend of mine tried a bit of it and asked me if I added chicken stock to it (I didn't, the only liquids in it are tomato juice, water, olive oil, heavy cream, and melted butter) and it doesn't have a weird basic aftertaste like my most recent batch did. Went great with a grilled cheese sandwich consisting of cheddar and herbed mozzarella.

I made a star bread tear ‘n’ share loaf! This one has pesto and prosciutto between the layers. And it’s so. Freakin’. GOOD. Will definitely experiment with other savoury and sweet fillings for upcoming holiday parties.

That looks super tasty. Would you mind sharing the recipe?
Sure thing! I used this recipe, minus the vanilla extract and cinnamon filling.

Just rounded out the season with a bean pot and beach boil out on a sandbar island, since we had friends from out of town. We bought lobsters, butter, lemons, and eggs at the store, and the rest of the veg and shellfish came from the garden or were foraged on the spot. No pictures - it's illegal to build fires out on the island - but it was nice to set aside the documentary impulse and just enjoy good food in good company.

We did have the cops show up - not sure if someone called them on us or if they just spotted the fire as the evening fell - but because my spouse is extremely charming, we weren't hit with a citation. They ended up staying for a bite to eat and telling us to give them a quick heads-up if we plan something like this again.

We'll definitely be planning something like this again.

Also, I've gotten a couple of questions about my parents cooking with wood, so I thought I'd show a picture of the kind of cookstove I grew up with:

My parents' house is pretty old. The kitchen is a later addition that was originally semi-detatched but now connects to the rest of the house via a doorway and pass-through. In the summer, my parents either open all the kitchen windows and set up several box fans to blow the hot air out of the house, or if it is sunny enough, they use a solar oven out in the yard. In the winter, they turn the fans around to blow the heat into the house. It's an efficient setup.

Because I am not always an idiot, this is not a picture of my parents' actual kitchen, but it is pretty similar and the stove itself is identical. Just imagine white cabinets and a sensible bluestone floor. If my dad were left to deal with a room like the one in the picture, he'd start working quietly after everyone else went to bed, and that poorly leveled brick cinder-and-crumb trap would be torn up and out the door by morning.

I made beer bread with the pumpkin cider I got at Trader Joe's last week, it turned out really good. I love beer bread, and it's stupid easy to make. I made creamy tomato bisque to go with it since I needed to use up some heavy cream. It turned out great and I'm looking forward to having the leftovers as lunch tomorrow.
