Let's say we have three parties: the Globalist party, the Nationalist party, and the Local Governance party. In your perspective the Local party best supported your interests, but polls have the Globalist and Nationalist parties neck-to-neck with the Local party being a trailing third. Normally you'd have no choice but to vote for the Nationalist party because although they are not great, the Globalist party is far worse.
However, there is a mechanism where a party can chose to relinquish their votes to a chosen party if they fail to achieve a significant number of votes. In this case, the Local party has registered that if they fail to achieve enough votes, all their votes will be transferred to the National party and added to their tallies. (the Nationalist party and Globalist parties are confident enough in their polls that they have not registered a party to relinquish their votes to) This would be less complicated then having voters fill out a ranked-ballot vote as the process is automatic, but still means that even if you vote for a distant third or fourth that your votes still matter. It may be possible for the Local party to exact a policy promise from the Nationalist party in exchange for registering the Nationalists as their transferable vote.
