Cold? Sure. But Id also call it "tough love" of the toughest sort. That kid needed job skills, as well as a life outside of video games. Video game addiction is a real thing ( a family member had it with WOW) and if this is what it takes to fix the kid, good on that father. I just hope the kid or Chris wouldn't go into PTSD if that happened.
I know Bob never would have done this to Chris, because doing so would mean he would have to deal with him more. Video games were almost like a free baby sitter to the Chandlers.
However at the same time, doing that doesn't necessarily mean that the guy will turn around and start working or gaining job skills. If anything, that probably did more to alienate the father and son than to show that he meant business. I'm always a little disgusted by extreme moves like that, as odds are high that the dad greatly contributed to this guy's video game addition. He probably kept buying games and tolerated his behaviors, then suddenly expected him to turn around and magically become an adult once he reached a certain age. Making an extreme move like this doesn't really accomplish much except make the manchild more likely to be resistant to actually doing anything. It'd have been better if he'd taken them away and told the guy he'd give them back when he earned them back on his own by working and gaining actual job skills, and then paired that with him taking the kid to see a shrink to deal with the addictive behavior.
