As others said, there are many factors. But to try to unify it, at its core I think it is the culmination of consumerism of social justice.

I think it can be many things, but in the modern era, its most commonly wanting to escape highly rigid gender roles for the women, pornsickness for the men, and just plain social contagion/grooming. Add on the fact that trannies are considered the next "social justice frontier" after LGB became largely accepted, and you have people all over the place thinking they're doing the right thing by validating these people. We have so little data on the few legitimate trannies that exist post-gender ideology bullshit that the only real evidence comes from neurological studies - since they only enroll trannies that actually transition, not the sick freaks claiming to be women while looking like cavemen. Trannies have some similarities to gays neurologically. The easiest way to explain it is that a straight tranny is just an advanced version of a gay man (none of this shit is really there in FTMs, but theyre studied less, so maybe there is something similar that we haven't found yet).

Second thing: Gender dysphoria used to be an actual mental illness that was treated with medication and therapy in Adolescents and adults, but now gets treated by being a tranny. Now these sick bastards are starting to condition and groom kids into being "trans". Kids are impressionable and you could easily convince them they are trans with little-to-no effort, and certainly manipulate a teenager who is simply gay or bi into being trans, so I don't know why these troon activists are pushing hard to get at the kids, unless their whole point is to condition and groom kids into being trans.

Gender dysphoria was never treated with any medication other than the medication needed to transition - and the therapy that WAS possible was when you got an AGP before they were so terminally AGP that they had gotten untreatable dysphoria and had to transition. Early proponents of Blanchards typology including Blanchard himself literally agreed that AGPs should transition too (provided you can't do anything else to treat them). It's tough because there are two main "camps" within the trans movement, and of course many sub-camps within them.

The first is the ROGD girls with a laundry list of psych problems that get discarded in favor of trans. A lot of things get labeled as "gender dysphoria". Everything from internalized homophobia, to autism, to reactions from childhood sexual abuse, to social anxiety, to BPD, to just being weird or the general awkwardness of puberty before you're mentally ready for it. Once you have labeled this problem as "dysphoria", now you have a solution: just transition and all of your problems will be solved.

The second camp are the malignant narcs who get off on dominating women, the unassailable motte of LGBT, and of course their own sexual desires. Becoming a woman makes that the narc will always have a woman he can completely dominate.

The victimhood narrative of troonery is especially appealing to people who want to garner sympathy, social capital, or emotionally manipulate others. It's a great way to make all of your bad feelings the fault of everyone else.

RE the last point, yes I know many women are standing up to trannies and do so at great risk to themselves. I applaud those women and I know they're out there. What I've noticed is that it's much easier to convince transgender men to detransition, then transgender women. Reason for that I think is that men are basically treated like garbage unless they were weeks and dresses in which case they're treated like deities. I think there were always some people who would have preferred to be the opposite sex, but for most of human history there hasn't been much of a way to really effect that change.
