He's broken beyond all hope now. We're just watching the train plunge down the mountain at this point.
I've actually been thinking about that lately. I would agree, but I did catch a very interesting documentary called Child of Rage recently, and the gist of it is a girl who was physically and sexually abused by her father at the age of one developed severe psychopathic tendencies at a later age, including a desire to actually murder her family (she hid a set of knives in her room, but the parents locked her door every night out of fear, so she could never carry it out) at the age of five or six. She also strangled baby birds to death for fun and molested her adoptive brother.

Anyway, my point is she entered intense psychological treatment and actually made a very big turnaround, even breaking into tears as she remembered her past actions and feelings, now being able to identify where they came from. She was very young when this happened (even though Chris is closer to a 6-year-old girl than a 30-year-old man :julay: ) but it makes me wonder how much a person could change with the right help. The abuse she went through was almost inconceivably horrible and her state of mind was a lot worse than Chris' is, so it made me think. Probably impossible, but just maybe.

And, yeah, I know Chris would never accept help and all that, but the thread is about his potential, hypothetical or not.

The girl Child of Rage was based on, Beth Thomas now works as a pediatric nurse and sometimes does talks on the subject. Just thought I'd add that.

I was thinking of the film based on Beth not the documentary.

If we use the equation of mass x acceleration of gravity (9.8ms squared)x height = potential energy , we can actually figure out exactly what potential he's capable of in his current life. Of course there's two versions of this because what Chris says he weighs and what he actually weighs are possibly two different things.

Anyway let's say he weighs what he says he does, 212lbs(97kg), and is 5'10" (1.7m). Using that, his potential is 1616.02 joules. If we go by about how much most of us think he actually weighs in estimation, 260bls(118kg), then his potential is 1965.88 joules. These numbers may be off slightly depending on how many extra pounds of :briefs: he happens to be wearing at any given moment.

Sadly, seeing how he's extremely dumb, lazy, and mostly lumps around we may never know if he can live up to his potential no matter what he weighs.

Also, AUGH YEAH Math!
The idea is correct, but you should use the elevation of his center of mass (h_com) instead of his complete height - since half of his mass is below and half of it above the center of mass, his potential energy with respect to the floor is given by: M_body * h_com * g_earth = 118 kg * 0.85 m * 9.81 m/s^2 ~ 984 J.

Of course this is an approximation because the center of mass of a human body is not exactly at half the entire height (IIRC for men a bit above, for women a bit below the geometrical midpoint).

That's true. It's been so long since I had to find potential energy on anything at all that I had to not ignore Google results and see if I had remembered the formula correctly. Thanks!

I am curious what people think about what could Chris have achieved if things were different, with out changing too much about him. Also, what needed to be different for it to happen.

Best case is probably something like:
-Cole and Bob fight horribly shortly after Barb "falls in love" with Bob.
-Bob winds up bailing on Barb shortly after they marry; Barb is pregnant with Chris.
-Barb decides that she can't handle an autistic child on her own, so she decides to put Chris for Adoption.
-Chris is adopted by Mr. Dylan Dash and grows up to be an orange Guido.

But if the Scenario requires CWC to wind up closer to himself...
-Chris' idea of Sonichu has won a contest, Sonichu might be his unique creation, but it becomes a mania of his.
-The effect of this mania is that Chris throws in incredible effort when it comes to art and drawing. (This is, perhaps, not that far from his current state, given the slow way he does things)
-Chris' quality of artwork continues to improve; that's what Mania means. He might be Honor Roll in High School, but he's passionate about artwork and when he goes in PVCC, he studies art. After two years of high school art classes, Chris' artwork reflects drawing, planning, and consideration of his final project; in short, he makes decent imagery.
-Chris is in a different circle of acquaintances in PVCC, the odds of hitting an awkward artist girl in his classes are fairly good. Since I'm trying to satisfy the OP's scenario, this is what Chris thinks he wants: A Heartsweet. In reality, it's also a lot more; someone who will push back against his major failings and be a positive influence that he has lacked in his life thus far.
-The effect of all of this is that Chris winds up major changes to his life because of his Heartsweet. Early steps, like throwing out shirts like the Classic and getting dress clothes, greatly improve his appearance. As men do for other reasons, love can make a boy a man. Barb sees Chris as dangerously far from her, but Bob completely approves of Chris growing up in this way.
-Chris tries working at Wendy's, but after three months on the job he is deeply unhappy with it and quits. He's aware of the power of the internet, so he builds a deviantart account. Higher quality images plus a more balanced personality means that Chris builds a non-troll following on Deviantart.
-Chris, however, liked the money he had from Wendy's. Not great at dealing with people but reasonably capable of following orders and rules, Chris gets a job at UPS moving boxes. It's a hard job in terms of physical demands, but its something Chris can do, fills the repetitive tasks niche that autistic seem to like, and it means that Chris has non-troll people he deals with daily and a source of exercise. Chris' coworkers are largely men, so this helps him overcome his aberrant dislike of other men.
-Chris isn't well employed, but he has a hobby, a girlfriend and a job. He's fifty pounds lighter, never touched Lipitor, and lists Michael Snyder as a reference on his resume. Ultimately, he decides to marry the woman who he's reshaped his life around; leave 14 Branchland court behind. It's Bobs' last triumph, helping CWC get married. His health failing, Bob dies one year after CWC is married.
-Barb is a petty woman from start to finish--but Chris has a terrible screaming match with her and simply leaves. Inadvertently, this is a direct death sentence for Barb, who is now alone in a house with a hoard and no one to help her. Chris is in a cleaner, small apartment with his wife. As it would happen, Barb passes on rather quickly without Chris or Bob around. Chris and Cole are left to sort out the mess, but Cole doesn't really want much of the estate.
-Moving into 14 Branchland isn't happening unless the place is cleaned from top to bottom. In one of the better uses of $2,000, professional cleaners dispose of tens of tons of crap that Chris doesn't care for, then fumigates what's left behind. In a further mission, the young growth forest that's grown with Barb's neglect in the front yard is removed, the house is repainted and the roof is fixed.
-14 Branchland Court is paid and clear, so the money being used for rent can be used for other things. Chris wants a daughter and his wife wants a child too, time to get busy.
-Chris is now 30 years old and reasonably achieved what he wants in life.

And then He wakes up and it's time to change the bandages on :snorlax: ass
:julay:

Chris has no potential, because he is very resistive, and has a high impedance.

The term "maximum potential" doesn't apply to Chris. It's meaningless where Chris is concerned, because it's only a valid concept for things that could conceivably reach one. Chris isn't one of those.

In other words, there will never be a point in Chris' life where an observer could look at him and honestly say, "He couldn't do any better."

Chris could always do better. He just doesn't. Because he's Chris.

Or there's mass-energy equivalence (E = mc^2). 118 kg * (299,792,458 m/s)^2 = 1.0605311109094 * 10^19 Joules. Because there's not enough energy on Earth to get Chris moving anywhere in life, let alone at the speed of light, this assumes we can find enough antimatter to build an Anti-Chris. In my humble opinion, Liquid came very close... but we're still here. Has he rewritten the laws of the universe? Is he really the architect of reality?

He's greasy though.

this is his maximum potential

double post for big 200

Technically his potential is infinite because his current standards are so low. If he could get and maintain a minimum wage burger-flipping job for six months, it'd be like anyone else on this board getting a bachelor's degree. If he got promoted, it'd be like a master's. He becomes manager and he's the fucking president of a university.

i'd say if there are a bunch of websites dedicated to his failures, he's reached his maximum potential.

It doesn't matter what Chris's "potential" is, that doesn't sell me.

As of now I am saying that the beagles have more potential of being successful than Chris. *SIGH*

With Chris's personality, I'd say his maximum potential is exactly where he is right now. And rapidly declining.

He would make a great zoo exhibit. Kids can feed him q-sands and watch him play vidya. Autism in its natural environment.
Sorry for sounding :alog: there but Chris is past the point of no return. I can see jail or at best a group home.
