What IS evil?

I can't reconcile that with the very thick feeling of evil that's settled on the world, something that feels like an intruder, a pollution of the world, and one that comes from some kind of conscious source. I can easily believe in a Satan, but I don't know how to think of evil as a thing unto itself.

I think that sense you have can be attributed to existing supernatural evil.

Examples abound in Holy Writ of supernatural sources of evil e.g. unclean spirits, rulers of the darkness of this world, the god of this world, the prince of the power of the air. A mystery of iniquity is also mentioned.
