What is it like to not care about anything other than yourself?

I don't understand. The thread title and OP don't align. If you really don't care, why make a thread asking a bunch of random assholes on the internet about it?

As for the OP, I mean I can relate a bit. At my job I hear the most exceptional "I heard it on CNN" hot takes every day, from people who have wondered how do isolation rooms get air supplied with the door shut. These are people who spend time in said rooms and somehow never see the massive air vents.

You know what? Just tune it out. Mind your own business and just get through the day.

The sensible thing to do would be to stop worrying about things you can't control as if they were personal problems and shift focus to those important around you. In the end they'll be the ones you have no matter what happens in general.

Fucking hell man. This is the most glorious period of all of human history. Our grandparents lived through the deadliest, largest, and most industrial war this Earth has ever seen, and hopefully will see for a very long time. Before then people would literally die from stubbing their toe and getting a infection. Transportation across a few hundred miles before trains took fucking forever compared to the days in a car or hours in a plane, and communication wasn't the instant 2 second messaging it is now. Your complaining about politics when people regularly murdered each other over politics and religion far more of

Cities would be sieged by ancient armies and the women would get raped after most of the males were killed/enslaved. This was considered normal and even encouraged by most ancient societies. Even the more civilized ones like Rome and Greece, although they usually handled it better....usually.
Genghis Khan ordered the death of all tartar males over three feet tall, so unless you were a uber manlet or very young you got fucked.
The rights we have as people today barely existed in the minds of most men throughout most of history.
Your car alone is extremely eldritch technology to even the smartest man of antiquity.

But no "me sad because people act dumb during virus, they say mean words about president, and no female talk to me"

Fuck off

On some level we will all wonder about ourselves, our futures, our careers, whether anything will ever compare to the memories we had just a few months ago—when you could go to a restaurant and someone in a mask didn't cautiously peek from the glass door. Or you went on your weekly grocery store trip and the exit door wasn't roped off from the outside, and on the inside, the shelves weren't barren and people dressed like they were cosplaying a hit squad didn't scurry about trying to avoid each other.

The litmus test is when it starts affecting your family, friends, and loved ones. When someone close to you finally gives up the fight at home and checks into a hospital, how do you feel then? If your empathy extends beyond your own situation and radiates outward to them, congratulations, this was a test, and you passed.

The other part of that test is going to that same grocery store and realizing "People still have to work here for 6-8 hours, and they're probably fucking miserable, holy shit. I only have to suffer for 30-45 minutes of this."

I know a highly social and caring individual doing a PhD and they don't care about anyone else, that they do not derive positivity from. It's healthy and keeps them functioning. Not caring about others before yourself is a good trait if done properly. Why weigh yourself down with caring for others if they don't do the same for you? You only had a best friend in school because they realized you had something they wanted, the same way you did. If people went through life not caring for anyone but themselves, we'd likely not have a bunch of depressed twitter troons control the daily agenda of social media, but people only using social media to brag about their daily achievements and how great they feel about them.

Instead we get people like you and "i wanna die lmao"
