I love my birch bush. The leaves flit in the nicest way. Not sure how helpful that is, though.

Magnolias. They're very pretty, and one day I felt like I came in tune (for a moment) with their chatter. They're nature spirits (like dryads) that watch over the land in preparation for its redemption.

I like Joshua Trees myself. They probably aren't very handy though.

I love my lilac. Good for pollinators, lovely bloom, nice tree/bush when not in bloom. You can make a lot of things from lilac.

Bay laurel is evergreen and you can pluck a leaf and use it in your soup.
