What is the psychology behind someone believing the earth is flat even when there is a mountain of evidence disproving them?

Flat-Earthers are idiots, and idiots are people who hate change and therefore can not learn. Due to how we perceive the world, one would assume the earth is flat before they learn basic geography and how the Earth is actually shaped. They clearly can’t move on from that initial perception. Maybe they’re poorly educated and learned these things a little too late.
 
It is this lack of certainty in knowledge that leads to things like flat earthers.
No, you don't need anyone to tell you the Earth is round to verify it. Merely watching a boat sail below the horizon, thinking about why there are timezones or just fucking riding a plane should convince you.

Not to get too far off topic, but if you've never seen it - I'd highly encourage checking out random hobbyist footage from extremely powerful zoom cameras on YouTube. People take those things ocean-side and find boats so far out that they've long since gone "invisible" to the human eye. It's really cool.
