What is the Purpose of Doxing?

I was under the impression that weening is discouraged here, yet every lolcow thread now has the cow’s dox within the first page as a matter of course. I don’t know what purpose it serves other than encouraging weening, and I’ve never seen anyone question this. Older threads weren’t like that.
