See thats my issue with anime, personally. It all looks the exact fucking same. At least western animation has some distinct variation over tone and artist. Something like "Samurai Jack" looks wildly different from, say, "Courage the Cowardly Dog", the stylistic choices make it interesting.

Anime is just all the same lazy, samey design that seemed to coalesce and standardize in the late 80s.

Avatars, if we take the word for what it truly means is something that represents you or that is you.


Now obviously it can be indirect. It may represent what you find funny or interesting, or where you want to be or what you want to be or what you desire and so on. But its a part of you. In my case it's a finger pointing at your exceptional face among many other points of interest as an observer of human nature.


I get that people might like cute cuddly things. But that's usually a female thing. And chicks also tend to have an other kind of anime avatar than the type of guys being referenced here.

You might also be a fan of a specific series, it may hold some great writing, humour or irony, maybe even warmth. Like that of say Totoro. It is quite sus though that most of the anime avatars are lightly clad young females/teens rather than say OnePunchMan-like or something from a cult classic like Ghost in the Shell or Akira or even Totoro. So yeah, you could argue the quote below but it doesn't answer why the very narrow selection of anime that's often picked as an avatar is chosen instead of something along these lines:

So what do I see when someone has a character like those made by "Walfie"?
Well maybe someone that likes cute little things in the best of ways. Maybe someone that's a child at heart. Maybe even someone that missed out on a part of childhood and likes to exhibit those behaviours as an adult.

What do I see when someone has an avatar like Neko GF? The shit OP references. I mean I don't a degree for that. The name Neko GF already suggests enough. In a way its similar to Brony's and there's a reason why Brony fandom is so looked down upon. It's like a safe space for people who never developed a healthy sexuality but are too insecure and partly too full of themselves to admit that to themselves. So they have created or become part of this safe space of cute little ponies. The ponies are in their teens and in the "adult" versions of MLP there's all sort of sexual inuendo mixed in with adult jokes to keep the interest high, but all in the backdrop of a sort of innocent-childlike naivety and artificial overblown comradery (that isn't really real among children but that these people of course never got to experience fully). That environment creates a feeling of being safe, of being able to finally experiment and indulge in things and that indulgence often becomes degenerate because again, it's being clothed in innocence (and so easier to push into depravity). So it's the same with this kind of anime. So it can be argued that people who have these kind of avatars often have unresolved issues that they are too weak or too disinteresred in resolving. Or perhaps even , as some cows are of their issues, proud of their degeneracy and try to justify it while portraying it. There are several threads here for example advocating that it's normal to fall in love with and sexualize cartoon characters.



So while there may not always be a fire behind the smoke that is every anime avatar, there is certainly a valid reason why many peoples instinct tells them there could be . And in the worst of these cases, just like in the worst of the Brony cases the sexualization of these often childlike, funny, fluffy, innocent characters stops being a safe space to experience some kind of "adult" feelings and instead those adult feelings get focused on the childlike representations that you people keep watching over and over. Thus you become lolifags, pedo-lights, fucking degenerates essentially and you will forever have a hard time getting back on track.

Just like people who wouldn't or couldn't stop themselves from watching all sort of gore online if to mock it or out of curiosity or boredom become destroyed by it as time goes on.

Edit: Plus, I think it makes posts funnier. There's an incongruity when you see Serious Business being discussed next to a goofy, bug-eyed cartoon girl.
