What is your favorite controller?

I have only played ps2, ps3 and old retro consoles like snes and xbox sometimes, I really like the Ps2 controller.

The one without the analog is good for playing fighting games.

it's very durable and doesn't break easily even if you go hard on it, it also feels pretty good in the hand. playing games like Resident Evil 4 and God Hand can only be enjoyable with this controller.

The xbox controller is also pretty good for playing newer games, I bought one recently.

it's very easy to get used to and best for playing shooter games... having the d-pad down instead of up is a great advantage, but the only thing I don't like about it is how big it is and the handles are not very comfortable, compared to it the ps2 controller feels a lot more ergonomic and lighter... this is my ranking

1. PS2
2. XBOX
3. PS4
4. SNES
5. PS3

I've really enjoyed the licensed USB Gamecube controllers they make for Switch, due to liking the classic Gamecube controller. I wouldn't argue that either is the very best, though.

I only use MadCatz Gamecube controllers. Get on my level, faggots. :smug:

You just unlocked a core memory of the terrible fun size 3rd party PS2 controller with Lisa Simpson on it that my parents had to buy for my little sister back in the day because her toddler hands were too small to use the proper ones.

My favorite standard 1st party controller overall might be PS2, it's just super well rounded and competent for every genre. Honorable mention to NGC, it feels more comfortable, and works very well for the games in its library.

Vita has the best controls for a handheld system. The dpad is accurate and feels just about right, and the sticks are surprisingly good. It's missing some inputs the Switch has, but Switch is the most uncomfortable piece of shit I've ever held, it gets an F for ergonomics.

Really though, I'm generally not too picky about controllers, except for 2D Fighting games. I hated PS3 & PS4's L2/R2 for fighters, so I got a 3rd party controller which was serviceable. And 360's was even worse, I was in awe at how bad fighting games controlled with it. They're very good for other genres, but someone didn't test them for Street Fighter.

I guess I feel about the same, like I can play an arcade shoot em up with a pad I suppose. Fighters need a stick tho for sure it just makes sense. These things they have nowadays, these Nightmare Devices they call "hitboxes" are just a straight up abomination. At that point just use a keyboard (I get why they don't I just hate those things).

My main gripe with modern controllers aside from the nasty D-pads: don't like gamepads that have giant handles on them and fill out my entire palm. I dunno why, really. Genesis or PC-Engine/NES shape all the way.

Oh yeah here is that 6 button genesis pad with the big shell I was talking about. I know I wasn't the only kid who wanted Sega to make one of these. The great thing about these is that they feel just like new old stock genesis controllers and they aren't artificially inflated in price to 50-60 bucks. If you are trying to decide between a cheap chinese genesis pad for 12 dollars and a licensed one from this company for 18, trust me and just spend the 6 extra bucks. They feel great.

those huge battlestation things that look like they belong in a nuclear submarine are so freakin cool. I can just imagine some rich kid having the absolute time of his life on Christmas with a giant blanket over his loft bunk pretending it's all real. I know the rest of us did that without the giant Mech Switchboard :]

oh shit you actually reminded me about something that happened a couple days ago. I was watching F1 and had just gotten done working on that hybrid controller I mentioned, so I had peripherals on the brain. I wondered if any companies made a really slick F1 sim wheel and was pretty surprised:

While that is WAY more over the top than I had imagined, these things are nevertheless extremely cool feats of engineering. Apparently the podium/base thing is the important piece with these particular sim wheels, because it has all kinds of force feedback tech inside to mimic the extreme nuances of auto racing. By coincidence I already followed a guy on youtube who happens to be a racer himself and saw he did a video on them where he takes the cover off the podium and you can see all the crazy shit inside.

I don't know if I love anything autistically enough to invest tons of money in a giant simulator control setup for them but I would absolutely love to build one.

DS4, easily. Perfect weight and Size for my hands, and has concave triggers and thumbsticks unlike the previous iterations. My only knock against it is that most developers are too fucking lazy to put in the five minutes of work to have matching in-game glyphs. For as much deserved shit as Ubisoft gets, it's the one good thing they've been consistent on.

PS2/PS3. I tried to like the DS4, but it didn't feel as good in my hands.

Sony controllers were perfect for handlets back then. Why would you need something smaller than the stock PS2 controller?

gamecube controller will always be my number 1 favorite of all time

I really loved that controller used it a bunch when it came out. Played a ton of RE4 and Bloodrayne on that one lol. I also like that they were smart enough to put GC controller ports on the Wii.

kinda vaguely remember seeing some third party Switch controller at one point that looked like N64 and Gamecube pads combined.

Anyone ever come across a really, really solid third party controller back in in the day? I am trying to remember but none of the ones I tried were ever as good as the official one. That see-thru "programmable" SNES pad that everyone and their grandma seemed to own a copy of was the biggest piece of shit ever lmao

aww man that sucks. Do you know what brand it was?

speaking of orange I saw an Astro City arcade cabinet at a modern arcade in Houston a few years ago that the owner had restored, he decked it out in a slick looking orange and white color theme with the buttons and lever knob and accents, looked every bit as cool as the neonn pink and green scheme those things usually have. You don't see too many Astro cabs here in the USA

The second USB Genesis 6 button I ordered to harvest parts from for my project got here today. Don't know when the Big6 will be here, because it is still on preorder. Just wanted to gush over these wonderful things a little more, they always feel perfect and always just so crisp and clean out of the box...seeing that Genesis packaging always makes me feel a little bit like an excited kid again. Don't know if I mentioned before but this modern version now has two shoulder buttons.

I am very thankful to Retrobit that they kept the price on these Honest and didn't gouge people 70 bucks for them like Krikzz does for their (worse) version. Since this one is licensed people would have absolutely paid that much for it, and they would have felt just fine about that price after seeing the quality.

PC keyboard, preferably IBM 101 or equivalent with same layout. I'm still using one from the early '90s.

Example:
This fucking layout.jpg

I started off playing a lot of roguelikes, then branched out into other PC games.

The only console I ever bought was a PS1 when I was in university. That had a decent controller IMO (Especially when compared to the N64s some of my friends had. I still can't figure out how they held those things' controllers for long periods without hurting their wrists.)

Never got a PS2 because PC gaming had taken off again when they came out. Both PS2 and Xbox were also unreasonably expensive where I come from for some reason.

The one I have is fine, although from what I've read online, they do have somewhat inconsistent quality. Still better than Mad Catz 15+ years ago at least.
They had a weird quality timeline.

First batches were amazing, like Nokia solid.
Then they blew up and increased production to keep up - quality dropped, sales dropped.
The newest hardware is really solid because they are trying to regain that market share.

I bought them when these things were just released, and let me tell you the d-pad and facebuttons completely crap out from very light gaming. They look nice so I guess it's still cool to have one on display, just useless for gaming.

I like the DS3 the most but its not the most durable, PC support was awful with those programs you had to run to recognize it, and this is really minor but it would feel better if it were a little heavier. DS4 solves most of that but the touchpad is awful as a touchpad and a button, it changes your audio device to the controller on PC, a giant light as well as a smaller light bar for no practical reason, and I think the RL buttons and the general rounder redesign stinks.
