What keeps you going during hard times?

Remembering the good times. Also, knowing that life has no absolutes. The monolith of today may become rubble tomorrow. One of my favorite examples is how the Golden Age of Piracy started. It began with shit-tier living standards imposed by the nobility onto the lower class and wonder why their sailors started hoisting the black flag and their shipment of caviar got delayed.

That being said, its important to remember that everyone has more options than they could account for. As long as you are willing to take that gamble when the time comes.

Peeweetoms youtube channel when you see the amount of shit that dude got your own troubles seem often not that important anymore.

Idk, I guess that my body doesn't die. That's really all you need.

What's the other option, suicide?

In the past I always found if you think about offing yourself then you start thinking about all the remarkable stuff you could do if the consequences don't matter, and before you know it you've formed an entire fantastical narrative in your head, and that paradoxically shows that you do still have some passion for life, you're only repressing it.

Sometimes embracing death is what a person really has to do to realize what's worth living for.

Reminds me of this quote:
“Rehearse your death every morning and night. Only when you constantly live as though already a corpse (jōjū shinimi) will you be able to find freedom in the martial Way, and fulfill your duties without fault throughout your life.”

― Yamamoto Tsunetomo, Hagakure: The Book of the Samurai

Music, humor and any kind of assurance that I'll be able to survive said hard times. Friends help but you don't want to depend on them to cheer you up, that kind of shit is really draining and causes resentment.

Because I wouldn't be happier dead, since I wouldn't even exist anymore (don't believe in an afterlife).

And on the offchance the Christians are right, suicide is a direct ticket to hell, do not pass go, do not collect 200. So either way it's a dumb idea.

Didn't essentially every famous pirate have a short career and an untimely death?
They did. But there were also those that did succeed and get away with it. Like getting that pardon and settling down. Either way, their actions ended up reforming the work conditions aboard the sea vessels out of fear that the crew may simply mutiny, take the cargo and start robbing other ships.
