What kind of kittens could be born to a black cat and a white cat?

I took this from Quora...

What color kittens would a black cat and a white cat have?
If an all black cat mated with an all white cat, their offspring would mostly depend upon the color and pattern of their predecessors. A few years ago, I had an all black female impregnated by an all white (creamy white) male. She had three kittens: an all black male, a creamy white male with grey tips (like a Himalayan), and a wee little tortoise shell female, the runt of the litter.

I'd like to make a quick endorsement of the all black cat. Despite popular superstitions, my experience has taught me that the all black cat is clever, playful, loving and nurturing. They may not have crazy cool colors or patterns of fur, but they make up for it in...

It depends on what color the white cat is ”under” the white. Cats have two basic pigment colors - black and red. They can then be modified in different manners. A diluted black becomes blue/grey, a diluted red becomes cream. There are also other color modifiers creating lilac, chocolate and other colors.

Ignoring color modifiers, here’s how colors work in cats: Female cats have two copies of the gene coding for their basic pigment, one for each X chromosome. They can be black, red or red and black. Males have only one X chromosome so they are either red or black. If a male cat is both red and black they either have some kind of chromosome abnormality (usually rendering them sterile) or they are chimeras (2 kittens that merged together in the womb).

There are different genes coding for a little bit white or a lot of white. White cats have genes coding for either red, black or red/black, but the white covers it all so you can’t know their true color without a gene test or figuring it out from breeding the cat.

With that said, these are some of the possible outcomes if a black cat would have kittens with a white cat:

If the white cat is black under the white all kittens would be black, with or without white on them. If the white cat is female and a tortoiseshell under it all (red/black) the male kittens will be red or black while the females will be black or tortoiseshell/calico. If the white cat is red, the females will be tortoiseshell/calico and the males will be the same color as mama cat. In all cases there could be white on the kittens too.

Solution
slightly unrelated, i have a long history working with and owning cats and somehow black cats are the opposite of their human counterparts. they're super sweet and don't really do the "randomly attack" thing while you're petting them like some cats do.
