I've always stated that Chris is perfectly capable of doing useful labor, but it has to be labor with no delay of gratification. It has to be a situation where if Chris does a useful thing, he is immediately rewarded, and if he ceases to do the thing, the reward stops. This would be very successful in employing a lot of otherwise-unemployable people who suffer from conditions similar to Chris, and it might even be useful in borderline situations where people have trouble achieving their goals due to limited ability to delay gratification. If you could get the work/reward cycle down to under 5-10 minutes, this could reach even people as far gone as Chris.

Manufacturers of gambling machines have this down to a science, although in those cases the "work" is simply giving the casino money. Imagine if you could give the casino labor instead. Some countries have bottle return "pawn" prices. like a coke bottle 10 cents(it's included in the price when you buy the full coke bottle), put into an automatic return machine at a grocery store. There are people who will collect those from bins and streets for the return and extra income, even few people who don't need the extra income will do it just for the "high" of doing it. Chris is not one of those persons who would do it, even if it's basically like playing some find the bottle game and finding free money, immediate gratification.

There are similar behavior in some other lolcows - as soon as their new hobby "business" becomes an actual responsibility and categorized as work they drop it, if it's their "passion project" etsy store or whatever it doesn't matter, what only matters is that it becomes a responsibility and true nobility can't have those tying them down. The three strikes only apply to violent felonies. Hitting Snyder was reduced to a misdemeanor in the plea agreement, as was the Gamestop pepper spray incident.

Even if Chris is convicted of multiple felonies in his current case, they would only count collectively as one strike. The idea of the three strikes law is that each strike happens after you have been punished and released for a crime. Thus for Chris to receive three strikes, he would have to commit another violent felony after release from his current confinement, be sentenced for that, then convicted of another one after the second release.

Chris will not be in for three strikes for a long time, or ever, probably. I don't think he is going to carry pepper spray again, he's never going to carry a gun, he's not going to have the opportunity to rape anyone. My only concern would be road rage.

Long-term involuntary commitment is almost impossible these days. The laws were changed to make it extremely hard to impose, and most state hospitals have been closed and the ones that remain are reserved for the legally insane, which Chris is not. Most states can now only do temporary holds that range from a few days to a few weeks.

The reason you see so many crazy homeless people on the street isn't that there aren't programs out there, but the programs require cooperation, and often aren't located in the areas that the crazy homeless flock to.
