What the hell happened to cities?

The last time I traveled to the city was early in 2020 and things were pretty normal, aside from all the COVID BS. Prior to this I would take a yearly trip in typically. This would be considered a small city and it didn't really have any of the issues you'd hear about, petty crime really didn't even exist in any meaningful amount.

I was shocked driving into the down town. It's filthy, stuff is strewn around, tons of graffiti, there are tents and homeless encampments all over the place, addicts using drugs out in plain sight in public parks, and had some of the sketchiest people I've even seen milling about.

All of this didn't exist two years ago, it would have been completely unheard of. This is the kind of thing you'd see from some far off city in the news, probably a city in America.

I thought maybe it was a fluke, but I traveled to another city further away and it was the exact same situation. Both of these were beautiful, clean places not that long ago where you felt safe and could actually leave stuff in your car.

Is this a consequence of COVID and the reaction to it, or something else entierly? I don't understand how a place can go so downhill so rapidly.

I was in Minneapolis as it burned. Lefties love torching their own cities
Really because I can Google Map Minneapolis and it is still there and fine maybe you are using hyperbole?

See there is Minneapolis still existing. So what the hell were you on about?

Literally deliberate destruction of organic communities for political expediency.

Exactly the kind of disregard for human collective spirit you'd expect after letting international finance win a world war.

People like to go off about BLM and antifa wrecking cities during the Summer of Love, and there's some truth there, but I think people ignoring the fact that we're having a huge drug crisis right now. Over 100,000 Americans died from overdoses last year; cheap fent has more than filled the gap left by the dialing-back of Oxy. A significant fraction of America has basically just given up and been given up on, and some of those folks have turned to crime and drugs and homelessness. We never really recovered from 2008, and Covid/Floyd in 2020 has only accelerated the decline.

This has led to a wave of pushback on politicians who have been viewed as "too soft on crime" (mostly Democrats) and in the short term, this will lead to Republican victories, but the Republicans don't really have any coherent strategy for addressing the problem, either. What do we do with people who have no practical use to globalized capitalism? No one wants to pay the taxes for a generous welfare state; it's impractical (to say nothing of inhumane or immoral) to imprison them all; there's not enough make-work employment; and Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism is not even a coherent crack-pipe dream.

I'm kind of worried that the answer to the question has been decided by The Powers That Be to be, "World War III."

I fucking swear you rural idiots love to say the cities are burning down hey fuck heads I live in Las Vegas city of sin and guess what assholes we are GROWING. So what the fuck idiots? You think you are right? You aren’t.
Oh fuck off you retard, cancer grows too. Enjoy not having water in a few years.

I can visibly see the cities near me declining rapidly, which is why I posted this. Just ignore idiots who rant endlessly about antifa and democrats, because there are clearly larger social trends and forces at play here.

The cities near me are:

1) Largely conservative
2) Are suffering/noticeably declining despite the economy being "okay"
3) Are not located in America

Yet they are having similar issues to many, many other cities all over my country and yours. So it's not as simple as the binary American politics that have rotted your brain.

All your homeless are shoved into the outflow tunnels under the strip to try and hide your shit.

I don't know if you've ever heard of it but there's this thing in English literature called "illustrative writing". I don't think he literally meant that the entire city was razed by the Huns and set ablaze. Do you like, have Assburgers or something my guy

Basically urban decay, there is no reason to maintain shit since property prices are insane anyways, you also have the population either getting older or being replaced by third worlders (depending how based your country is) so culture slowly dies.
This is an interesting point. Even crack dens have gone up massively in value over the last few years here, if for nothing other than the land under them. Any house in any condition increased in value and sellers were frequently doing no pre-sale work and selling sight unseen while demanding no condition offers.

I recently moved there.
Las Vegas isn't really a city. It's not comparable to LA or SF. It's growing because those two cities are such shitholes.

Las Vegas has an interest in keeping it's urban areas from getting to trashed up since a large portion of it's income comes from that area.

So basically, more junkies need to die.

No I have this thing called being literal. If you want to say a city is being destroyed then say it this metaphorical bullshit is for the wackos. Fuck off.

Clearly you have never been to California or any other west-coast adjacent city if you're sitting here talking about how "cities didn't seem to be so bad until covid came around!" Even then, it doesn't have to be west coast. Go to fucking Baltimore and it'll be just as bad as L.A. and S.F. combined.
