What the hell is a tank engine?

Solution
If you had undertaken even a cursory delve into Thomas & Friends lore, then you would know that he earned the title 'Tank Engine' following his courageous actions during WW1, where he hunted down English tanks on behalf of the Kaiser, literally tearing their armour open with his giant mouth, before consuming the flailing crew members inside.
This is a tank:

But this is also a tank:

Now tell me which one do you think Thomas was named after?

Thomas the Tank Engine could not be called Thomas the Train, because a train is defined as "a form of rail transport consisting of a series of connected vehicles that generally run along a railroad (or railway) track to transport passengers or cargo".

Thomas is a single locomotive. He is not a series of connected vehicles. Thomas might form part of a train, if and when he is attached to other vehicles (e.g. freight cars, passenger cars), but he is not the train.
