What types of games do you like and why?

I love RPGs both Western and Japanese, strategy games and FPS.

Why? Because I'm a giant loser.

I find myself playing shooters most of the time. I've been a military nut my entire life, and have been playing shooters since I was around two or three years old. I don't discriminate on genre, though. Aside from racing and fighting games, I'll play almost anything as long as it's good. RPGs and RTS games tickle my fancy plenty of times. I enjoy some platformers, but I'm honestly garbage at most platforming games.

I'm also a sucker for anything post-apocalyptic themed. Usually, they're shooters or RPGs, though.

Grand strategies and 4X because I like playing games with a long timeline that make you really invest in the world and develop a sense of history. They're also helpful if I have something important to do as they can be paused or are turn based, so don't need your attention 100% of the time and you can have them running in the background. Examples of my favourites: Darkest Hour, Crusader Kings II, Civ games, Alpha Centauri.

If I feel like losing myself in another world for hours then it's any game that has a great atmosphere and especially a good soundtrack as I like to make music in my spare time. Games like: Silent Hill, early Resident Evil, Deus Ex, Bloodborne, Demon's/Dark Souls (not a fan of 2 and haven't played 3). A game that really surprised me with how good it was was The Last Door, a point-and-click adventure game which somehow managed to create a great atmosphere and really spook me despite its minimalist graphics. Currently planning to play System Shock after watching SuperBunnyHop's review which basically confirmed it was my kind of game. Will play the second one afterwards.

Games I'd like to try: CRPGs (I've only played Fallout 1 & 2), world builders like Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress, full-autism games like Dominions 4: Thrones of Ascension.

Anything and everything really. Western RPGs and dungeon crawlers come top of my list, along with pointy-clicky adventure games. Current crop includes Witcher 3 (again - it's just that good), Tyranny, and I've still yet to finish the expansion to Pillars of Eternity. In terms of adventureage, I liked the Blackwell series and recently played an excellent one-man effort called Donna, Avenger of Blood.

Old style run and gun FPSes aren't bad, including Shadow Warrior 2 and the 2016 Doom remake.

I miss the lack of building games in recent years. Cities: Skylines was okay but felt a bit threadbare after a while and the incredibly autistic level of detail given to simulating traffic meant that my cities were always nose-to-tail jam-packed pollution pits. The remake of Constructor looks promising though. And I really liked Transport Tycoon and its open-source remake OpenTTD.

Elite Dangerous is what I play the most by far though. Because I'm a huge space sperg.

I can't abide Call of Duty, Battlefield, or similar modern military shooters. I really can't.
