What was an update that negatively impacted your enjoyment of a game?

Watching overwatch slowly be intentionally killed by blizzard sucked.
In hindsight, Moth Mercy really was the beginning of the end. Brigitte was the final death blow.
I still feel disgusted when I think back on how much time I wasted on that game.

I used to play DOTA 2 mainly offlane. I think it was sometime after the patch that added four bounty runes to the game, one in dire and ancient's jungles and one near both offlanes. Between this and the denial experience you get it allowed a trisafelane meta to become the norm since the two supports and the safelane carry wouldn't be underleveled. This led to 3v1 situations in almost every single game. Playing 2v1 isn't too bad since the carry is usually too busy hitting creeps gaining gold and experience to harass you so you could just hide out of lane and sap experience. Playing against a 3v1 lane meant two supports could harass you out of lane constantly and outlevel you. It also led to offlane players having to use unorthodox strategies to get experience in the offlane, such as sneaking into the enemy jungle to try and lead the very first wave and subsequent waves to your tower to get experience.

This led to heroes like Lone Druid and Natures Prophet becoming popular offlaners because they could pull the initial wave with their summons without having to worry about feeding first blood. Traditional offlane heroes that I liked to play felt like playing at a disadvantage and I ended up just quiting the game cold turkey because of it.

It is shocking how every single balance change just removed the fun out of that game. It makes me feel schizo trying to tell people that it genuinely was an extremely fun games years ago now that it's in it completely bastardize state where the majority of the characters have had there entire fucking moveset changed and the rules set completely altered. Comptive/ranked has always and will always for 1% of 1% of 1% of players and unless your game is built from the ground up for it trying to appeal and change for that market is fucking retarded, see also tf2.

I Hate when they changed the look of minecraft, not just the block textures but having so many pointless biomes that the simple charming artstyle was ruined. There's also the hunger bar just feel like an annoying extra step but the true worst change was getting rid of the oof hit sound. At least minecraft has the extremely laudable feature of easily letting you play older versions, any game that does that deserves to be celebrated

Moth Mercy was the shark jump moment for me. I was a Mercy main and really hated the changes even though it made Mercy ludicrously OP for what seemed like ages afterwards. The old res actually had some strategy behind it even though most casual players never seemed to appreciate it. You had to know when a res would swing a fight or not and sometimes that meant doing a res on one person rather than waiting for the big 5 man res. And if you were hiding out to wait for a res then teams would send a Tracer or Genji after you and they are supposed to win that fight 1v1 or at least force you out of hiding. The game was designed with flankers for a reason.

Playing the original version of mercy felt incredibly light and free, like you were gliding around the world from point to point Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon style. The Valk flight just felt like some weird video game flittering around, it didn't really feel like flying. Then, the slow one man res creates this annoying overlong moment of forced stillness that killed the rest of the visceral joy of playing Mercy.

I'm sad. I had so much fun playing original Mercy and I will be bitter about it forever.

At the time Blizzard tried to sell the change as making Mercy more fun or people thought she was boring or whatever. Overwatch was a massive hit game. Overwatch's most played character at the time was Mercy. There are multiple reasons for that including attractive character design, simplicity to play, forgiving on twitch skills, a strong set of abilities in relation to the other healers, and also BECAUSE PLAYING MERCY WAS INCREDIBLY FUCKING FUN AND REWARDING. If the most played character in a hit game isn't fun then how the fuck does it become a hit game?

Ahh, fuck you Blizzard.

Its an older example, but BFV still pisses me off.

They get the game into a great state, release a patch the destroys balance and makes guns feel like shit, go on holiday break for 3 months, majority of players leave, after holiday break they revert patch. After that they dropped support in the game to work on BF 2043.

And cataclysm for WoW.

It really is a shame, it was roughly around that update I started to hate the game.

I fuck with this heavy fr fr. But seriously, people look at the state it's in now and don't understand how good it used to be.

CS:GO becoming CS2
You vill use a pre-made loadout.
You vill buy a new GPU.
You vill not get any new maps for a year.
You vill get no decent anti-cheat,

There's been a lot of bad changes to Runescape over the years that have decreased my enjoyment or have driven me away for a time. The most impactful to me was when they made hard word filters that ignored your profanity filter choice. The second one that pissed me off was removing the whole "No man can kill me" reference in Recruitment Drive. I will sometimes joke that I don't mind the diversity update which added more niggers you can kill, but obviously that was a bad update both for ideology and because those NPCs seem to have different IDs and fuck with certain plugins and I hate that. The pride events get really fucking gay, the last one in particular pissed me off because the in game reward was a t shirt that you can buy IRL to support troons or some shit. Most recently they added a quest with a they/them character, it wasn't even a good quest. It's felt like after a certain point they stopped polling things without first pre-polling them and making sure that they'll pass. While it isn't out yet, I'm expecting sailing to upset me. All of this sounds bad, but ultimately there's far more updates I've enjoyed than disliked. At its core the gameplay I enjoy is still intact and expanded upon in a way that I like, with new content that I enjoy grinding. But if I never saw another pride parade or heard from that troon content creator again, I'd be happier.

Oh if I remember correctly, holiday events used to need pass polls to enter the game. Until they started doing pride events. Now they just get added.

CS:GO becoming CS2. It looks great don't get me wrong but it completely tanked my performance and I hate that they removed achievements.
What happened to CS:GO is a tragedy.

They took a perfectly fine game, and wiped it from existence with a rushed out inferior replacement that to this day is still missing most of CS:GO's content and suffering from a cheating crisis. There also hasn't been a new operation in over two years, no achievements, no factions, etc; and it's been nearly a year and a half. In that time the majority of stuff we've gotten are community-created; that plus the lack of a new operation and cheating crisis has bafflingly put CS2 in TF2's shoes.

Mind you, this is Valve we're talking about. You'd expect a higher quality standard from them, especially for such a massive change for their biggest game; and they completely fucked it up. They really don't seem to care for their most profitable game anymore and it's utterly insane. The cow is malnourished, being left untreated while they continue to milk it for all it's got.

I can still have my fun with it, but it's more frustrating than anything.

It also hurts when the customization options that Valve is giving (i.e skins, music kits) are dogshit. That fucking Masterminds 2 Music Kits they recently released is the perfect example of it, and mind you, there are several music kit concepts that can be used, they choose not to.
You vill get no decent anti-cheat,
I swear to God if you keep suggesting kernel anti-cheat I will fucking break your monitor. FaceIT got fucked when cheaters have started penetrating their matches so that is out of the window for CS.

Well honestly I can't remember anything that negative. It didn't make me drop the game, but the latest update to Fallout 4 broke the mod script extender, which is used in about 50% of all mods for the game as far as I understand it. It even coincided with the release of one of the biggest mods for the game- Fallout: London. I know Bethesda is probably circling down the toilet at this point because it's in the Microsoft's clutches now, but it's completly insane that there wasn't a single person in higher managment who asked "wait a sex bois, lets check how it will affect the mods users, since, you know, in 2024 about 99% of Fallout 4 users are playing with mods" or that no one cared this much. I know it's far far from the first time it happened, they did the same with Fallout 3, but it's so stupid.
But I will say that I will drop any game that will "update" itself with mandatory faggotry at any point.
Yeah this and Skyrim SE fucked themselves with updates forever. The older versions are just better for script extension and I'm never updating fuck you Bethesda

Team Fortress 2: Meet Your Match
Clicked to add this and was happy to see it was the first answer. What a clusterfuck.
That thing should be studied in universities as a case study.

Those three dreaded words have destroyed what was once a functional game into one of the most dysfunctional free-to-play games of the current world. Broken servers, absolutely questionable balancing, over-prioritization of Competitive Mode, that no one uses and a plethora of bugs that may or may not persisted to this day.
It also showed a fundamental misunderstanding of why so many people enjoyed TF2. TF2 was fun. Competition can be fun, but this was a different kind of fun.

It became so bad that the modern TF2 fanbase that was grown from post-MYM are far more deranged that the OG playerbase.
Facts. Just look at the threads here.

The recent updates for TF2. Valve just wants TF2 to die so they can put out their newest shooter.
Deadlock. It has a thread.

Smite, when they added Sol.

Bellona could be excused away with the whole girlboss feminism that was pretty hot at the time. Although they wanted to be a friend of the feminists, but also coomers, which gave confusing messaging.

But Sol, she was the clear "lets a new gods with stuffed kits, far too many CC immuns, more and more damage, heals, sprints, you name it". She was nerfed over and over again because she of course massively over performed, but they continue to give the female release gods broken kits, then tried to nerf them under control, whilst providing sexy skins.

I haven't bothered with it in years, its the same thing over and over again. Not to mention, balancing around the top 10 teams, so fucking over the actual playerbase in favor of the 3 remaining streamers who are pro players.

World of warcraft: cataclysm and all subsequent updates, cataclysm was hot garbage with absolutely no redeeming features.
My hatred for the Cataclysm expansion goes much deeper than that, and it should for you too. For context, I've played WOW a couple times as a free trial, I find MMOs overall to be stupid timesinks, and the business model of renting a game as a service and not owning it disgusting. But, to each their own, and I haven't enjoyed a Blizzard game since Warcraft III.
When Blizzard launched WOW Cataclysm in 2010, they were so adamant on making it a success that they literally trademarked the word "cataclysm". This is insane, and fucking retarded of course, but one of the consequences of doing this that people forget is because Blizzard are greedy cunts, this forced the rights holders of Homeworld: Cataclysm to change it to Homeworld: Emergence, 10 fucking years after it was released, (Cataclysm is an expansion for Homeworld from 2000) in fear of getting sued by the monolith that is Blizzard.
It's the textbook definition of corporate bullying, with Blizzard being a megagiant at the time in 2009/2010, and whoever the fuck owned the Homeworld IP, if it was still Sierra even though they'd be on life support by then, or whomever, being tiny in comparison to Blizzard and of course not able to fight them in court for suddenly infringing upon Blizzard's ownership of the fucking word CATACLYSM. So fuck World of Warcraft, fuck Blizzard, and fuck their stupid expansion. It's one of the scummiest things Blizzard's ever done, and that's really saying something. It's been totally forgotten, but I remember, and all the other Homeworld fans remember too. But it shouldn't be, and Homeworld Cataclysm will always be Homeworld Cataclysm, a great game, arguably even better than the base game, and Blizzard can eat shit and die.

The Smash Ultimate update that launched alongside the Byleth DLC because it added Byleth.

Oh, also that update to the original version of Castle Crashers that fixed the infinite EXP glitch. I get wanting to fix bugs, but anything that removes a fun glitch in an offline (or “can be online with co-op”, in this case) game that you’d have to go out of your way to encounter anyway annoys me. On that same note, later revisions of Super Mario 64 DS fix a lot of the fun collision glitches that let you do stuff like walk underwater if you mashed jump in a very specific location.

A bunch of Payday 1 and 2 updates, such as the safes, updates focused on hardcore players, and ARG.

Safes were cosmetic micro transactions added years into the games life.

Some things needed to be nerfed. Invincible armour builds, grinder (heal regen that outpaces damage dealt), the AI being unable to shoot you if you hid under a table, that kind of thing. The problem is the hardcore fanbase would get achievements when the game was broken, and then the game would be fixed. This meant if you didn't cheese the achievements in the first week of them dropping, you were basically fucked. Infamy basically made problems with players wanting to grind the same mission over and over for fast levels way worse.

PD2 was clearly built around hard and very hard being the intended way to play, with normal for new players, and overkill for skilled players. The inclusion of difficulties after that are clearly broken as they ruin the feel of the game, lock you into min-maxed builds, and encourage the use of previously mentioned exploits. They just aren't fun. And yet hardcore players still complain about how Payday 2 was an "easy game" and how it ruins high level play ...in a co-op game with no PvP mode.

Finally, the time limited events and ARG stuff. Can't play the 3 specific days an event is running? Fuck you, you don't get the cool unique event items. You're not interested in a shitty ARG? Fuck you, here's a bunch of weird, out of place things like a weird painting and a giant rug with a compass on it slapped all over the levels.

What did these change?
Disagree. There was basically no difference between hard and very hard and compared to Payday 1 the game was laughably easy. It still is easy. Deathwish doesn't even need any min-maxing or meta builds. I've been running my muscle build for about 8-9 years now it works on everything, even though muscle is considered crap and far fr om the meta. DW is easy. DS is unfair but still managable if you're not some russian or chink who barely know how to hold a mouse.
I think in your case the problem is really just a lack of skills.
What really killed Payday 2 was the emphasis on dodge builds. Suddenly that became the 'meta' everybody used and 99% of the gamers had no idea how to play and died within 10 seconds because they had no armor and nothing and that dodge crap barely worked thanks to the horrendous net code and general abundance of bugs in the game

Worst for me: Season 5 of Deep Rock Galactic. It adds not much of value but the by far dumbest even in the core stone, a game mode so broken, idiotic, pointless and stupid it's almost comical. When you have a event that can only be played 'properly' in one way you screwed up, if that way involved tricking out the game itself, you failed as a designer. That stupid Core Stone works by dangling of a zip line like a retard and shooting at an object for minutes, while the enemies can't get to you. yeah, that is fun (and of course originally it was o badly made, the developers had to nerf the event twice on top of everything)

The introduction of Dio to Grand Chase. Grand Chase is a 2.5d character arena fighter (think a more fighting game oriented version of Smash). Before this character came along, you used your specials by holding the attack button and releasing it when the appropriate amount of MP is high-lighted for the level of special attack you wish to perform (1st bars take about half a second to charge, 2nds take a second, and 3rds aka your ult, took about a second in a half). Each character had 3 specials per "class" (same character, but different weapon and moveset), with some like Arme (the mage) having more (white/black magic, hit a button to switch between the two), but still sticking to the "you have to charge it" rule. These are known as "MP characters".

Why is Dio special and fucking ruined everything? Dio doesn't use MP... he uses his own unique system call AP.
What does this mean?
Instead of 3 set specials you couldn't change... he had a skill tree with about 10 you could pick from, 5 of which could be assigned to keys as "specials". Notice how I said "assigned to keys"? Yeah, not only did he have the broadest, most diverse and unpredictable moveset of all the characters... This niggers specials were INSTANT. PVP was alreadly looking bad when they introduced Jin's 2nd class which had a fucking retarded 50+ iframe screen length dodge roll, but he at least had to charge his specials like everyone else. Dio took PVP out back and visciously raped it to death. Thats how bad it got once the AP flood gates were open. AP's assigned skills weren't just "specials" like all the MP characters either (when you perform a special, you're locked into it, a character portait appears, you get iframes, have to charge), they also could assign completely different moves/combo extenders, adding to the broadness and unpredictability I mentioned.

I stuck with the game till the original NA servers got shut down, and tried the re-release and just can't get back into it. All my muscle memory of how to play Elesis is still there, but all the charm and fun is gone. The original systems the game had were damn near perfect and the PvP actually felt like it required a deep level of skill (much akin to something like high-level Melee) despite being so simple that almost all attacks came from 1 single attack button (z). Once skill trees and AP's came along, pvp was no longer about skill, it all came down to spam wars between the AP characters with the longest specials, with the biggest hitboxes, mashing buttons at each other for 5 minutes until eventually one dies, while all us MP users sat there with our thumbs up our asses because we were wiped out in the first 30 seconds.

If you play the game today, you'll notice all the characters now have skill trees and this "assign 5 instant skills" kind of style because AP characters fundamentaly broke the game that fucking much. MP characters were generally more balanced in their design, so even today a lot of the older MP characters like Elesis, Ronan and Ryan can't even compete in PvP. I will always fucking hate you for that KoG. I hope you cunts are barely breaking even these days.
