What were your favorite things about the 7th gen?

The 7th gen of video games was an awkward time for games, there were many bad trends and downsides marked by a metric shitload of developers and publishers closing their doors as budgets ballooned, but yet it had plenty of great moments as well, let's talk about those.

First of all the first couple of years of the 7th gen were very different than what came later, it was a more experimental time where the rules hadn't yet quite been written and this gave rise to some of my all time favs like Dead Rising, Bioshock and Portal.

After 2007 things took a bit of a downturn though, Japan really lost their mojo for a while there by trying to imitate western games and creativity started getting stifled by yearly franchises, yet in the middle of that you had Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City which are also among my favorite things about that gen, as a lifelong Batman fan those games nailed the childhood fantasy of getting to feel like you are Batman, they were also among the last western developed games to really go all in on sexy women with Catwoman, Harley Quinn and Ivy.

In addition to the Arkham games you also had the criminally underrated Ghostbusters: The Video Game which was another licensed game that managed to fulfill a childhood dream, that one deserve to be an Arkham level hit imo but it sadly wasn't.

And finally another of my top favorite things about that gen was Valve, who were on fire that gen and of course I'd be remiss if I failed to mention Fallout: New Vegas.

On a side note, another thing I miss is what gaming culture was like at this time, so many good laughs and good memes were shared, it was overall a very fun climate where the people in the culture were people that actually cared about games long before the dyed hair brigade showed up.

Ah yes this era.
Every Grandma and soccer mom bought there kid a wii because some talk show told them to. Xbox 360 had the infamous red ring of death. The famous ps3 reveal at e3 2006 $599 us dollars and all. Every girl and hispanic kid on the bus owned a DS. It was an era before our insane socialpollitical and cultural climate on the internet.

Xbox Avatars, Miis, and Playstation Home. It was just something you could personalize a bit. Granted Miis are still a thing but they aren't as big of a deal today.

One of my favorite games from that generation was The Lord of the Rings: Conquest and it's incredibly overlooked. Think Star Wars: Battlefront but LOTR. Great multiplayer game. It also has a story mode called Rise of Sauron where you play out the story as if Frodo was corrupted by the ring complete with edited film footage.

I'll agree with this one. Games were mainstream but not too mainstream where losers hadn't latched onto it and started policing it. Everybody basically did whatever they wanted and all was well.

LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIDE LACEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER!

Like I said, the memes from around this time we're glorious, like "my body ready"

Everybody basically did whatever they wanted and all was well.
What the fuck ever happened to people just leaving each other the fuck alone? It worked perfectly well.

Why is the culture the way it is now where everything's got to be one great war between the demographics over who gets to be king shit of fuck mountain? Stay out of my hair and I'll stay of yours, what's wrong with that? Why is endless tiresome conflict and drama preferable to people?

I dunno what you people are talking about, retard blue haired feminist people existed back then. The Ass creeds of the era were made by one.

A literal ton of series fell into decline like Final Fantasy.

Motion controls were on everything and ruined shit

Paid online came into being

This was the generation that merged console and PC together and gave birth to the Mustards

Skyrim was released for everything and put Bethesda on the map

Hardly any worthwhile JRPGs on consoles outside of Tales of Xillia 1 and 2, Tales of Graces F, Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2, Xenoblade, Dark Souls, Demon's Souls, Nier, and a few others.

Gamer Fuel was born in this era

Electronics Arts hate was born in this era

They might have, but they stayed far away from video games, the Asscreed chick was not like that.

I couldn't even tell you why feminists decided to declare jihad on video games like they did, other than it being a popular thing and they hoped to piggyback off that popularity, but I also think the it's the fact that it was something many men enjoyed and the thought of male joy makes them seethe with hatred.

I specifically created this thread to focus on what we liked about the gen, I said right at the start that it wasn't perfect and had it's flaws, but the point of this thread is not about that.

Every Grandma and soccer mom bought there kid a wii because some talk show told them to.
The Wii represents a huge gap in my gaming knowledge, I bought one, but can literally count the numbers of Wii games I've beaten on one hand, motional controls just never really jibed with me.

Yeah but you could still make fun of them and not have your life ruined if you weren't anonymous.

Honestly, I'm not too much of a fan of this era. Japanese games were really falling flat on their faces, so, rhythm games were on a sharp decline, and JRPGs were on life support. So, I started looking for obscure and weird titles to try and fill the gaps, and I didn't come across too many, though I did end up liking Tokyo Jungle and Dead Rising a lot. It's also weird to think about how my favorite RPG of that generation turned out to be South Park: The Stick of Truth, of all things. I also spent a lot of time with assorted indies, like Spelunky and Rogue Legacy. There weren't a lot of games in that middle ground between the AAAs and the indies, so the whole generation felt sort of out-of-balance.

Come to think of it, there's a ghost town feel to a lot of that era's AAA games when you try to play them today, with dynamic title screens that display news that's forever locked to something like "Get Ready - Fjipdefjalsd Sokjfawofsd 2 releases on October 14th, 2009. Are You Prepared?™", along with error messages if you try to enter the DLC store or play online. Plus, that nagging feeling that you should probably play the remaster, as everything has one now, and the graphics are all blurry and the framerate sucks. Older generations didn't have that issue, but I guess that's how it's gonna be going forward. At least you can still play the base game, and generally hack your system to install DLC that's no longer available.

Also, American Xbox 360s now permanently have an ad for NBA 2k17 front and center on the start screen, so that's annoying.

The Wii is where a lot of the more arcade-like games were hiding out. Excite Truck was a lot of fun, Punch-Out!! was a whole lot of fun and maybe the best game on the entire platform, and Rhythm Heaven Fever is always good.

You should consider hacking your Wii. It's by far the easiest of the three to do so, and all of the games were on DVDs, so you can easily load up every game worth playing on a 256gb external drive. The SNES emulator for it is pretty good, too.

Devil Dice was the best game of the 7th Gen library and it wasn’t even 7th gen. Fuck all your fancy bullshit first person shooters, motion controls, and Skyrims. Fuck all that shit. Devil Dice motherfucker.

Proof that the gaming industry was about to take a shitty turn. Made me invested on the outside world more.

It was the first generation I didn't care about as much. Many of my favorite genres died or got shitty (JRPGs especially). I don't care for shooters much, which still rule gaming now. It's also when Nintendo sorta gave up on making good hardware and games and just went with being quirkier.

Although, there were definitely good games like Street Fighter 4 and Lost Odyssey, they were just fewer and farther between.

Well, Team Fortress 2, the Left 4 Dead and Portal games came out during that time, and those games are all considered classics. I guess technically, since they are primarily PC games, they shouldn't count, but they all did release on 7th gen consoles, so meh.

As you said, Dom, there was also Fallout: New Vegas.

I know a lot of people don't care much for the 7th gen, but for me, it was probably the last generation where video game development still had some risk taking and innovation in it before everything started to become more homogenized. It was also during that time where PC gaming really started to become popular and people discovered games that they never would have played before.

Not gonna deny all the shitty things about it though. By that point, gaming had started to become more corporate and the rise of shitty online practices were on the rise. I also saw people complain about the massive influx of CoD like shooters, but frankly I thought that was much better than what we're currently getting now, where practically everything is either a low budget indie title or a bloated AAA game with bugs up the wazoo. Both of which marinated in political bullshit.

Putting that all aside, I do have fond memories of playing Halo 3 and Left 4 Dead on my 360 with people.

The end of 50hz at least for 360 and PS3 was so good, Wii still had a few 50hz games, however.

Ps3 being region free was great, 360 kinds of had it and the Wii was super easy to mod it in, hell Wii was great modded.

Digital stores, weren't perfect with the download limit for Wii and 360 for a long time, plus not every retail game was also available digitally but it was the start of it all, and we started to see games that would have never got put on on consoles before,

Wii VC and PS3's PS1 classics (guess some PS2 classics), weren't perfect but dear god it made it easy to find and buy rarer games, such a shame Nintendo and Sony have dropped this,

On pc side, Steam started to take off, and more console ports started to happen, hell even Capcom started doing pc ports, and those MT frameworks ports like DMC4 and RE5 are still amazing. By the end of the gen, more Japanese publishers and devs started trying their hand at porting games to pc.

As I mentioned Japan went through a really wonky period, although they started off strong in the gen with games like Dead Rising, Ace Combat 6 and Ninja Gaiden 2, but after 2008 veered into poorly trying to imitate western games.

Things did get better but not before a bunch of devs, genres and series had tragically already died.

We can talk about the flaws too, sure, but the point of this thread is the positives.

I might but generally there just isn't much on the Wii that really interests me, although Punch-Out!! is one that does.

PC games definitely still count, the way I look at it is you go by the years a console generation ran, so even if it was on PC it's start part of that "generation"

Putting that all aside, I do have fond memories of playing Halo 3 and Left 4 Dead on my 360 with people.
Same here, I really wax nostalgic for 360 online sometimes and wish I could go back to it as it was then.

I especially had fun playing L4D1 one with this guy to the point that I regret not keeping in touch, however he stayed with Xbox from what I could tell and I shifted to PC as my main platform.
