What will the Internet look like in 10 years?

Will it be even more sandboxed into 10 huge websites? will places like Twitter and facebook lose peoples interest and make them go looking for content elsewhere?? Will there be some sort of revolutionary tech that totally changes the landscape? Give me your thoughts.

I remember when I was growing up and got cable. It was awesome, having all those TV channels... and nothing to watch. Didn't stop me from wasting time in front of the TV, though. That's what I feel the future of a lot of the internet is heading towards -- curated content by corporations. A few huge sites and a handful of big sites, and... that's about it. Just not boring enough to keep people in front of the screen, forever.

I have no doubt at all that thanks to things such as EARN IT that in the next few years consolidation will be ever increasing. I wonder if they'll ever hit a point that it'll be impossible to just create a forum or IRC room for a specific interest.

Null has mentioned that we're headed towards multiple smaller internets rather than one giant wild west becuase of corporate and state interests. I can't say he's wrong. Back before they all moved to Pixiv (again, consolidation), a lot of Japanese artists started geoblocking IP ranges due to harassment from American weebs. Look towards Russia and see if they successfully block their websites from being visible from the west.

Longer term? I'm presuming VR and AR will be a massive shift in some fashion, but I'll be damned if I know what it is. I imagine being able to chat on Discord while actually doing shit IRL will be cool, but will also require skillsets that will make the first generations after that shit lands pretty damned weird. Probably the end of the species if they can't find a way to make us disconnect and breed every so often.

Full economic consolidation meaning full cultural and tonal consolidation. It will complete the switch from counter-culture to fully mainstream culture.

However, the counter point to this will be that the counter-culture might (I hope will) give up most of the social media aspect of the internet and be able to make real inroads in meatspace. The coolest events and people will have most of their events advertised via stealth and meet up in person. The newest and actually interesting (ie not billionaire financed) works of art will be regional, divergent from the monoculture, and might not even leave much of an online presence at all.

I would love to get in on that.

The internet will be a part of literally everything you do, and all of it will be monitored and tied to your real life person.

No more anonymous screen-names no one knows, no more throw away emails, no more speaking “wrong-think” (see; having your own opinions) without real life consequences.

Disagree with trans youth having access to HRT? No access to your bank account for two days, unless you publically apologize.

Don’t think it’s right that the government is doing xxxxx and you voice your opinion online? That’ll get you investigated in some way.

And God forbid you type out the Nigger word, or try to tell some racist joke, internet access revoked for one week.
Meaning no bank access, no streaming, no ability to communicate, no ability to drive, oh you need food? Well you should have thought of that before, racist.

Imagine using your real name to type "Transwomen are not women". Off to the Death Camp Of Tolerance for you.

There is one website and it's Twitter, you are only allowed to post how much you love the Globohomo leaders. Any deviation from praising Globohomo gets you sent to the gulags.

Total disappearance of comments, likes and dislikes from the mainstream internet. Penalization of online political dissent. Think of the Chinese Internet, only worse.

Astroturfed crap everywhere, constantly dumped by major corporations and institutions. False "grassroots" movements, false "memes", false fashions, false trends made up by major corporations and institutions in total impunity without anyone being able to denounce them.

Zucc&co still trying hard to force their Virtual Reality and cryptocurrency nonsense to transform the young people of tomorrow into greedy and egocentric morons, embittered and devoid of any political conscience.

All I'll say is, if you like something or think something may be useful, even in the most vague of way possible in the future, save it locally and keep backups.
Make of that as you will.

today I read about how Tesla thought he could make the upper atmosphere fluoresce to provide illumination at night using wireless transmissions

the internet already glows hardcore so if everyone's using starlink or whatever in 10 years maybe you'll be able to see it with the naked eye
