whatever happened to Confused Matthew?

I was looking thru downloaded youtube videos I have on an external hard drive and found I had grabbed some Confused Matthew back in the day. Not very much though--I have less than ten of his reviews.

My memory is, he was a guy where I was exposed to some of his best work off the bat--I love occasionally re-watching Saw, the Matrix sequels, and his revisiting of Lion King (the friend who introduced me explicitly said to skip the original version and only watch the revisit). But I recall trying out other reviews of his and finding he was a bit of a mixed bag.

Still, sometimes I wish reviews in his style were still around. We need more people saying "Hey moron! Fucking moron!"

Anyway, anyone have memories of this guy?

I don't remember that guy. If I did watch any of his videos it didn't leave much of an impression. YouTube is kind of censorship heavy now. If you are looking for old style content like what was seen on YouTube a decade or so ago you are probably better off looking around on the alt/new tech sites like Rumble Odysee and if you want the kind of Boomer schizo conspiritard trash videos that used to get spammed on YouTube back in the late 2000's and early 2010's Bitchute is the place to go from what I have seen. A lot of them are just reuploads of shit I remember watching on YouTube when I went through a conspiritard phase in the mid to late 2000's.

I watched him quite a bit, pretty long time ago now. He just started trailing off over time. He peaked with the prequels not long after RLM did them, and then Lion King original and redo of it were good. My favorite is probably The Golden Compass, he was the only one that properly wrecked that piece of shit.

Towards the end he was just streaming lame games to 3 or 4 people like Marzgurl ended up. He lived with his brother and said they were both asexual, and the dude was freaking weird looking too. Overall he was one of the better blip/early youtube angry style reviewers of movies.

This is from 3 years ago, long after I stopped checking if he was doing anything else. This may be a reupload too though, he did that a lot. He reminds me a lot of Mark Bressler of Classic Game Reviews, similar wit and style. Mark is trying to make a 'comeback' lately too, but it's not going very well.

Looks like a lot of them are just plain lost media, but he has some on https://www.youtube.com/@confusedmatthew3736

Again, I don't know if that's 'his' channel or all reuploads, the dates on them seem to be more recent than I remember them being.

Golden Compass, my favorite:

This is one of his better videos IIRC. Videos he did that I also liked were Matrix Revolutions, Saw, Minority Report (I have the original version where he says the movie "has Down Syndrome") and his revisiting of The Lion King (I was specifically warned to avoid his original review as it apparently sucked, but the revisiting is actually a fun watch).

Incidentally, the video I linked just now surprised me. See I had heard about him reuploading stuff as "Confused Classics" but I didn't know he actually added new content to those, which makes them worth re-listening to.

The problem is, the videos I named... I also recall those being basically his only good ones. Any time I tried to go outside of those, I usually was met with disappointment. Then again I may have just not been looking in the right places. Part of my problem also is that I went in expecting him to hate everything he reviews but apparently that isn't the case (despite his reputation)--he liked Frozen for example, and so that review was kinda boring.

Nowadays though, there's an additional problem of.... well, when a youtuber crosses into the realm of being "nostalgic" for me, usually that's only for the reviews I actually watched back in the day. Anything I'm newly discovering just now is probably not gonna have the same appeal even if its also actually vintage. It's similar, I guess, to if you grew up only having two episodes of Ducktales on VHS, those two episodes are gonna be the most meaningful for you and the rest are gonna be "cool, that exists too."

If that makes any sense (and by now it should not surprise anybody that Skykiii has certain hyper-autistic hangups).

@mlanguishi

Dude looks like a black-haired Fred Figglehorn. I think I was better off not knowing what he looked like.

Bullshit. He probably into scat porn and a virgin with rage but keeps it offline. I remember him being triggered by old willy wonka memes and calling them rightwing.
Well he LOOKS a lot like an incel. I got a real spoony/Miles vibe with him. They kinda look like Miles too. But whenever some ugly guy says they're an Ace, it's just code for incel as usual. CM was the first one that acted like he had some need to declare himself an Ace, we only found out about Miles through his book reading list.

Really, since this has become the "describe who Confused Matthew looks like thread..."

Anyone besides me think he looks like the Game Dude?

I got a real spoony/Miles vibe with him.
I'm kinda getting that from his reviews too, there is something Spoony-esque about CM.

And the comparisons ramped up in my head when I was listening to the intro he made for the "Confused Classics" version of his Star Wars Prequel reviews and he mentioned he had a Dungeons & Dragons group.

) and his revisiting of The Lion King (I was specifically warned to avoid his original review as it apparently sucked, but the revisiting is actually a fun watch).
the only thing i know about confused mathew is the seethe he generated from the response videos. Mr Tardis and YMS, two resident cows, responded to his Incredibles and Lion King (original) reviews. Tbf i found it entertaining to see a guy with excyclopedic knowledge of the film point out the flaws in the review but it goes to show how easy it was to annoy people back then if Adum can hold a grudge of ten years based off one review where you dont like a popular film but in a way people dont think is well-worded
(I have the original version where he says the movie "has Down Syndrome")
Imagine if Norm got that from watching his video

They did one with him a few days ago.
CM had some good takes and was kind of an early 'good' angry reviewer. He went into the ace zone and tried to be some lame gamer streamer I guess. I actually reached out to offer advice back then to him and he was like 'I don't care about it'. So I gave up and he did too I guess. Those red cow people are so visually repulsive to me I can't watch them. At least CM had a good voice to it. These are voices for radio at best, not to be seen.

He was the kind of guy who learns what a trope is and suddenly decides it’s the skeleton key to all of cinema.

If a movie had tropes (which, spoiler: they all do), it was bad, because originality apparently meant reinventing storytelling from scratch every time. Then Mr. Enter came along, cranked that shtick up to 11, and sucked all the oxygen out of the room.

Matthew had his fans, but he wasn’t exactly sparking intellectual debate. Just one of a million YouTubers back then, getting on their soap box and screaming about how Spielberg is overrated.

His Prequel reviews were good for the time, but Plinkett's reviews soon came along and made them irrelevant.
It's interesting that he says he hates everything from his "Blip" era, because that's when I recall getting sick of him. His eclectic politics started seeping into the reviews. He wasn't enjoying it anymore and it showed.

I had no idea about his current "Christian asexual" identity. I seem to recall he had a girlfriend on the show occasionally. But maybe that was his brother's girlfriend.

I recall hearing he had a girlfriend too, and that there was some bad breakup which ended with her deleting his channel which is why a lot of his videos were missing for years.

That may just be an internet urban legend though.

I remember some guy named Chase Melendez making a 9 part video to refute Confused Matthew's review of 2001: a Space Odyssey. Then he died. I think it was the first time I had ever heard of a Youtuber dying out of the blue.

Didn't Confused Matthew have to remove a bunch of his videos because the character he used as his mascot was copywrited? He eventually revised the mascot, which is why it looks kind of odd. I did like Confused Matthew's take on Titanic. He was the only one I knew who was bashing the film and its flat characters back when it was still a critical darling. Seeing Confused Matthew active again is like seeing Armake 21 back from the dead. Or seeing UrinatingTree reviewing schlocky fantasy video games again.

It's called autism.

I wouldn’t call the characters flat, exactly—they have arcs and everything. I assume we’re talking about Zane and his walking oil slick of a Pinkerton. RedLetterMedia pointed out that the guy could’ve used more depth, and yeah. But cramming him into some eye-rolling love triangle wouldn’t have added nuance so much as swap out one trope for another.

But I digress. The whole “angry, cynical critic” doesn’t really fly with Titanic. The movie was swinging for that David O. Selznik, old school historical epic.

I've actually been loving Matthew/Dan's dynamic with the the red cow people. He's the kind of autist that Frankie can bounce his observations off of
