What's the best Mario game for switch or 3ds?

I'd personally say Mario Sunshine but if you truly want retro why don't you just get the older games?

Super Mario 3D All-Stars was a couple of remakes included 64, sunshine and galaxy, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a spiritual successor to the classic super mario world, there's New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. also NSO's expansion pack gives access to classic Mario games from older consoles.

I was just trying to use what we already have around the house. My kids have a bunch of Nintendo devices between them.
I do prefer emulating but I don't have the controller I like using anymore

New Super Mario Bros. 2, which was already mentioned, but Mario Maker for 3DS is also a great choice (it has single-player content designed by Nintendo, you don't need to make your own stages).
