What's the difference between Iraq and Iran? Aren't they the same thing?

Well, modern day Iranians speak Persian, whereas modern day Iraqis speak Arabic. Languages as different as, say, English and Hebrew.

Most Iranians are Aryan - the word Iran translates to "land of the Aryans". Iraqi's are arabs, and they historically don't get along due to racial and cultural differences. Also, although Iranians are Islamic they are Shia which the predominantly Sunni Muslims of Iraq hate for religious reasons. Furthermore the Persians (Iran) and Babylonians (Iraq) have many centuries of warring between them.

So they are racially, religiously and otherwise culturally quite different.

Interestingly enough this was a cause of much of their animosity since the Ba'athist leadership (Saddam and all his henchmen) that ran the country for decades was all Sunni, so the Shia were treated like shit. But I actually didn't realize there were that many, I always assumed they were maybe a third of the population. So they weren't even a minority being treated like shit, they were the majority. That explains a lot.
