What's the difference between the AVGN and the Nostalgia Critic?

I watch and like AVGN, but I've never watched the Nostalgia Critic (he sounds like a douche).

One thing I've noticed is that the AVGN is somebody pretty much everybody likes, but a lot of people, especially around here, have a bit of disdain for the Nostalgia Critic.

The odd thing is that a lot of what people cite as disliking about the Nostalgia Critic is stuff that the AVGN does. Long skits, playing a character (particularly one with a caustic attitude), etc. They seem very similar in terms of what they do, but they feel very different in practice.

THERE ISN'T ONE!!!!

Nah, but it seems like Nostalgia Critic has a really smug self important attitude (which is also evidenced by quotes from anyone who has worked with him), he also panders really hard. AVGN has remained pretty humble and just kinda does his thing. He seems like he just legitimately enjoys what he does. Which, I don't think is the case for Nostalgia Critic any longer. Remember how he tried to stop being the Nostalgia Critic and move on to other stuff, but was kinda forced to go back to it because the fans didn't like his other shit. I think there is also a lot of resentment in what he does. There's just not much passion in what he does, and it seems pretty clear he's just out there to make money.

The difference is attitude.

IMO AVGN "grew up" and Doug/Nostalgia Critic hasn't. AVGN's videos have always mainly consisted of just him/a guest star as well, Doug keeps shoehorning an unfunny supporting cast in along with him which can make some of the skits just unbearable.

AVGN's more recent videos are calmer than his older videos, but he's managed to keep a lot of his signature style intact while still keeping the content interesting. He has a kid, and he acts like it. Doug's been playing the same character for the last decade and it shows. They're both pretty chill off-camera/outside of their main shows from what I've seen, but Doug just does not want to do Nostalgia Critic anymore and boy does it show in every video post-To Boldly Flee.

Part of it is that AVGN is a character played by James Rolfe, who IRL seems like a pretty calm, chill dude, and Nostalgia Critic is Doug Walker letting his autism flag fly. James Rolfe also went to film school and does more than yell at a screen sitting in one spot.

EDIT: I know Doug Walker has skits now. Please don't make me recall them.

James doesn't try to force his shitty secondary characters down your throat like NC does. I mean Bullshit man and Board James have made cameos in AVGN videos, but it never detracts from the flow of the video like Doug.
And BS Man and Board James can actually be pretty fun in their own right.

Unlike Chester A. Bum and the like.

While I haven't watched Doug, that's the gut feeling I get from the way people talk about him.

Like, even when the Nerd is being at his absolute most crude and loud, he feels like a fun, goofy character, and he lets his normal personality out quite a bit through his videos. His acting feels natural, but at the same time, you can tell what's meant to be more serious versus what's meant to be more entertainment.

He does seem like the kind of guy who'd be fun to hang out with, which a lot of critics aren't.

They were never really all that similar if you ask me, they were just compared because they were both trail blazers back when web videos of that type were still a new thing.

But as others have pointed out, the main difference is James has always been a very down to Earth guy, whereas Doug is kind of full of himself.

I've always liked Doug/The Nostalgia Critic ok, but he's never been as good as James Rolfe, he's always been the RC Cola to James' Coke, nothing he's ever done is as funny as the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elmstreet videos were, those are literally some of the best web videos ever made.

One has a deep appreciation for movies and games, the other is that one friend of yours that makes those jokes on movie night that nobody laughs at and turned it into a career

Also interesting. You can tell from AVGN that even when he's doing one of his usual negative reviews (instead of the more rare positive ones) that he still has a vast knowledge of and love for his medium.

James actually believes in his characters and series, I think, as in they are worth the time and the effort to him to develop over time. Doug was ready to dump the Nostalgia Critic as soon as he got a whiff of fame and do that thing famous creators do where they branch off once their piggybacking is unnecessary. I think James understands and respects his audience and knows what they expect of him, as any long time content creator should. Doug on the other hand is the antithesis of that.

James is a married man with children and actually successful.

Doug's only success is a website/channel made entirely of massive self important spergs known for sexual harassment, every attempt to break away from the "Nostalgia Critic" was a complete failure as Doug is absolutely abysmal at doing anything other than hammy sperging at a movie for an audience of literal children.

Well, Dougs been covering up/ignoring rape, incompetence, sexual harassment, co -workers not being paid, andall while not being funny.

James isn't that funny either, but he's more interesting to watch.
