1. AVGN is clearly knowledgeable about what he talks about, but plays dumb because he has fun that way and his fans love it. He can switch from very interesting history of an entire console and company to screaming ASS at the top of his lungs and it makes sense for The Nerd to do so. And, the entire thing is a script, where bits and tangents are the norm. He cultivates a style where anything can happen from a found footage horror film with an arcade cabinet to fighting Bugs Bunny and it doesn’t seem out of the blue for him to do. The movie sucked, but is making a bad movie is the worst part of a guys internet career, he could do a lot worse. Speaking of doing worse, Doug.
The Nostalgia Critic has very lukewarm takes and tries to pass himself off as a big brain, but it falls flat nowadays with to much bits and not enough actual, well, criticism. He’s not the worst, but he’s not that great either. It’s the continued mediocrity combined with the ego that makes Nostalgia Critic a pain to watch.
2. The worst company James keeps, to my knowledge, is Mike. Mike’s an asshole, but he’s not really involved in AVGN and isn’t really that bad compared to the TGWTG/ Channel Awesome crew.
Doug is surrounded by terrible people, and that may have seeped into his image. I don’t know how much Doug knew about the things that went down, but it doesn’t reflect well on him or TGWTG as a whole.
3. James seems like a really nice guy, he’s a loving husband and father, he knows a lot about what he likes and loves to share it with others, and he loves his fans. In other words, The Nerd is an act. He’s acting like an insane spaz because it’s fun for everyone.
The line where Doug begins and The Critic ends is very, very blurry. That’s not bad in and of itself, at most he would just be annoying to talk to. It’s a small thing, but it adds up when you consider everything put together about Doug and TGWTG to just kind of be unpleasant.
Even if you like or don’t like one or the other or both, James just seems like a better guy than Doug. He doesn’t take himself to seriously, he has fun, and he’s clearly making stuff with the goal of making something people like. Doug seems to take his comedy writing chops way to seriously, he may have covered up/ignored various crimes committed by his network, and he just seems to be churning out content just to get paid. There’s a lack of artistic drive in Doug’s work that is apparent when contrasted with James’.
Because, like his work or not, The Nerd at least he has an artistic vision in mind, even after over a decade of work, he still tries to make good videos. Doug doesn’t seem to anymore.
That’s what I think, anyways. Someone who knows more about Doug can probably give better reasons than me.
