What's the difference between the AVGN and the Nostalgia Critic?

1. AVGN is clearly knowledgeable about what he talks about, but plays dumb because he has fun that way and his fans love it. He can switch from very interesting history of an entire console and company to screaming ASS at the top of his lungs and it makes sense for The Nerd to do so. And, the entire thing is a script, where bits and tangents are the norm. He cultivates a style where anything can happen from a found footage horror film with an arcade cabinet to fighting Bugs Bunny and it doesn’t seem out of the blue for him to do. The movie sucked, but is making a bad movie is the worst part of a guys internet career, he could do a lot worse. Speaking of doing worse, Doug.
The Nostalgia Critic has very lukewarm takes and tries to pass himself off as a big brain, but it falls flat nowadays with to much bits and not enough actual, well, criticism. He’s not the worst, but he’s not that great either. It’s the continued mediocrity combined with the ego that makes Nostalgia Critic a pain to watch.
2. The worst company James keeps, to my knowledge, is Mike. Mike’s an asshole, but he’s not really involved in AVGN and isn’t really that bad compared to the TGWTG/ Channel Awesome crew.
Doug is surrounded by terrible people, and that may have seeped into his image. I don’t know how much Doug knew about the things that went down, but it doesn’t reflect well on him or TGWTG as a whole.
3. James seems like a really nice guy, he’s a loving husband and father, he knows a lot about what he likes and loves to share it with others, and he loves his fans. In other words, The Nerd is an act. He’s acting like an insane spaz because it’s fun for everyone.
The line where Doug begins and The Critic ends is very, very blurry. That’s not bad in and of itself, at most he would just be annoying to talk to. It’s a small thing, but it adds up when you consider everything put together about Doug and TGWTG to just kind of be unpleasant.

Even if you like or don’t like one or the other or both, James just seems like a better guy than Doug. He doesn’t take himself to seriously, he has fun, and he’s clearly making stuff with the goal of making something people like. Doug seems to take his comedy writing chops way to seriously, he may have covered up/ignored various crimes committed by his network, and he just seems to be churning out content just to get paid. There’s a lack of artistic drive in Doug’s work that is apparent when contrasted with James’.
Because, like his work or not, The Nerd at least he has an artistic vision in mind, even after over a decade of work, he still tries to make good videos. Doug doesn’t seem to anymore.
That’s what I think, anyways. Someone who knows more about Doug can probably give better reasons than me.

From what I remember of watching AVGN: he made extremely crass jokes and had fairly creative skits that didn't really distract from the video. There were plenty of old bad games from his childhood to work with and the technology was so limited back then there was plenty to make fun of. Probably his magnum opus to me when I was a kid was him beating the shit out of and then taking a shit on Bugs Bunny.

From what I remember of NC: He had a really annoying shrill voice, his jokes were also crass but not as crass so he felt like he was holding back, his skits weren't really funny (there's nothing funny about screaming while shooting an airsoft gun or being hyperactive), and I remember him having a certain cut off date where he wouldn't discuss movies I was familiar with from my childhood. All in all, his delivery felt "canned" like he wrote out a script and read from it, but he had no acting chops so it was like listening to some kid read his textbook.

James can be funny and overall comes off as a good person who knows what he's talking about. Sure the AVGN stuff is running its course, but it still comes off as being infinitely better than the NC revival. On top of that, James actually learned to become a filmmaker, and while I think the AVGN movie is piss poor from a story perspective, from a visual one, it's not half bad for the budget he worked with, even if the effects look like total crap more often than not.

Doug just comes off as the relative that goes "LOOK WHAT I MADE IN MY SPARE TIME! PRETTY COOL, HUH?!" and shows off nothing more than a cheap home movie of himself being stupid. He knows next to nothing about film production, his writing is a trash fire and his acting? I'm pretty sure Doug's not acting half the time, he honest to goodness comes off as a legitimate schizo at times. And he acts like this both as NC and as himself, and as @CivilianOfTheFandomWars pointed out, it's hard to tell who's who at times. It's that worrying.

On top of that, the only controversies of note I can find of James were ones that were mostly forgotten about just after they were brought up, like the Cheetaman II scandal, and he's recovered more or less since then. Doug never recovered from last year's incident with #ChangeTheChannel and with this having been an ongoing thing since even before then, with the game show, Demo Reel, To Boldly Flee, etc. It's obvious the man needs to just fucking stop. But we all know the fans (another thing the two have going different for them, since Doug's hanger-ons are spergs of the highest order, and they weren't much better when CA had all its contributors) won't let that happen anytime soon.

The big difference between James Rolfe and Doug Walker is that James Rolfe actually cares about his content and is genuine about it too.

You don't have to find James Rolfe to be funny but you can probably at least respect the guy for creating an online brand that is like many of the countless American success stories that you may have read about before. Overall, James Rolfe made something of himself and he's a good person in real life that you can sit down and have a beer with.

Now Doug Walker on the other hand is just going through what many e-celebs go through after they peaked. Doug Walker never really grew up and the only thing going for him now is the Nostalgia Critic persona. James Rolfe made a successful Internet series, he made his own successful movie, he made some successful spin-off web shows, and is passionate about what he does. For Doug Walker, he only does the Nostalgia Critic now because it's probably the only thing that keeps him to pay his bills on time and he looks like he doesn't want to do it anymore but he has to in order to have some form of income and to stay relevant online.

I grew up with both James Rolfe and Doug Walker and all I can say is that James Rolfe turned out to be someone that will leave a positive impact on many and will stay relevant in the foreseeable future because people actually like him and respect him while Doug Walker sadly will get all washed up once people finally get tired of his content for good.

James Rolfe does what he does because he loves it. Doug Walker does what he does because it's the only thing that makes him money. You can see this difference in their content and overall attitude.

James revels in the amateur film stuff, and his friend since childhood Mike Matei shares this passion. Doug just wants to make original content but sucks at it real bad, and he is controlled by an egotistical brother who thinks most people are beneath them.

And besides, movies are for gays, video games are better.

I hate AVGN's characters almost without exception. The best episodes are the ones with him and the guy behind the couch. There's one video series in particular where he goes over all the earliest consoles and it's clear the guy has a tremendous amount of respect for the industry's history and development.

Doug shielded a pedophile from consequences until years after he had committed suicide.

I'm not gonna fault Doug for lacking the talent to make his dreams a reality. But the guy reminds me of the kind of coworker you end up wanting to strangle because he has so many obnoxious affectations. Imagine being on the phone with a client and having his shrieking muppet laugh pierce your eardrums from across the room. James looks like a guy who could turn it off. I don't think Doug can turn it off.

Though I've not cared much for the AVGN's output in the past decade (way too many people give that movie a free pass), I think one of the strengths that series has over Nostalgia Critic is that it's produced rather sparingly in comparison. It's almost like catching up with a good friend from college. Nostalgic, one might say. Meanwhile, Nostalgia Critic has been churned out weekly for over a decade. Burnout happened years ago, and the gimmick Doug has used to prop it up (skits) is one of his biggest weaknesses

There is a massive pretentiousness differential between the two.

Both can't act or read a script naturally. James at least knows that and rolls with it. He takes the editing and makes fun of himself. Doug hasn't changed in years with his his wide eyed, insane grin "im obviously memorizing a script" face, and then he tops it off by spouting said script as fast as possible.

Honestly, I've learned more about the the history of movies from James than I have from anything Doug's ever shat on. James just has the drive and soul for movies and you can tell from the way he discusses them. I remember Monster Madness being the thing that MADE me want to look deeper into the history of horror films.

The only thing Doug's ever made me want to do is drink heavily to blot out the sound of his autistic nitpicking.

James is cool as person even if his hanger on friends are annoying (Mattai).
