What's the point in hoping for another Sega Console?

Ever since Sega was out of the console race, people kept dreaming for another console of them to be released and every year, i hear new rumors about a supposed Dreamcast 2 and people longing for Sega to come back. And all i think is "what's the point?"

Video games have come along way since 2001 when Sega stopped. What could Sega actually do, to make a new console standout from the others? Not to mention, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are now billion dollar companies, while Sega has a hard time even competing with more successful japanese gaming companies, like Namco, Square or Tecmo.

Consoles used to have a purpose. It was the manufacturer's job to hunt for all these computer components that could do more for less money, then put it all together through nothing short of the power of a sizable team of skilled engineers. Now any idiot can do that, not even counting Newegg, you can just call up some Chinese sweatshop and ask for a console and they'll shit one out for you in a few weeks. No reason to hunt for high-performance cheap chips and capacitors when starving Chinese kids strip those out of discarded electronics for next to nothing. Now you don't even have to make the software, even that exists as cheapo, poorly-designed off-the-shelf solutions. And when you're OUYA or Valve and don't feel like putting much money into your scam revolutionary product, then just go ahead and slap Linux with a shitty GTK theme over it. And, honestly, are they putting that much of a monetary investment into this thing when there's not even any market assurance that it'll sell? Why spend a few extra bucks on designing the hardware and software to be just a bit more custom when they can spend it making the next generic Sonic game?
That's the issue with these new consoles not from the Big Three, either they don't have the money, or they don't want to spend the money, and either way, it's just another drop of piss in the bottomless bucket of Android/Linux consoles that do little and accomplish nothing. Even when Sony cheaped out and made the PS4 just a PC, they used custom, high-end components and a custom BSD kernel modded to hell. You won't see that anywhere else. You definitely won't see that here.

Speaking of scam, anybody remember this?

They said it was built from the ground up, but they stole a lot of their code from freeware emulators.

IIRC (and I probably dont) SEGA sold off their follow up to the Dreamcast, or atleast it's board, or their boards, or something, to Microsoft, resulting in the Xbox. They know how to make the parts and utilize them, but god damn their advertising/marketing is, even to this day, garbage.

Sega's new console was the Xbox but only a true Sega console can drive Sony from the lands. (punishing Sony is a main motivator, the Saturn and Dreamcast failures made people salty for years)

After the Dreamcast died ukresistance.co.uk started and it was hilarious, not in a "haha look at these losers" kind of way, they were actually really funny with a much more british oldmanmurray style. The largely forgotten but completely disastrous Playstation 3 launch was a glorious time for them.

I feel like they would try to pander to "retro-heads" and it would fail miserably.

I recall reading something about there being a few bits of DC buried in the Xbox bios.

Just a guess but it's probably related to some Windows CE stuff. The Xbox API is immediately familiar to anyone that has worked with Win32 and DirectX, Windows CE on Dreamcast probably had a similar setup for similar reasons and if the Xbox team suddenly had to find a working, embedded, console oriented OS they probably took a look at the Dreamcast stuff instead of studying what makes a Palm Pilot or Windows Phone tick.

Microsoft were in talks with Sega about buying them, there's also that, then Sega built their Chihiro arcade platform around the Xbox

I'd rather they get off their asses and onto a new Shinobi and Shining Force.

I mainly want Out Run 3 but I suspect the only way that'll happen would be if one of the current console manufacturers paid for the Ferrari license in exchange for console exclusivity because I don't see Sega in its current state being able to afford the Ferrari license by themselves.

My Sega wishlist also includes a proper arcade/console Crazy Taxi 4 game. And Shining Force and a new single player Phantasy Star game.

I would love a new Hang On. But you do kind of need the bike controller to get the full fun out of that. It's too bad moto racing games have languished. In the 80s few could top Japanese games or bikes.

The Dreamcast 2 bullshit was shortly after the Retro VGS / Coleco Chameleon shit show. No one wanted to pay premium modern day prices for a cartridge based console that had no prototype and zero chance of ever getting any real third party support. The autism was flowing full force and people thought that they could get planets to align and sell made up nonsense to people with ease. When the retro vgs / chameleon came and left as the glorious dumpster fire that it was, people started to understand that selling fantasies with old names attached to them wouldn't work. I remember some black guy wanted igg money to make old sega ip's and really just wanted money to write a letter to sega to beg them to bring back old ips. Then ya had the company who was going to make the DC2 and it was going to be this modern console that could play the GD roms of old and have brand new dvd quality games. Just a bunch of autistic people who thought that the world fall in love with their level of stupid.

Now that Atari successfully sold a lie to thousands of exceptional people with the Atari VGS, it seems that the dream of making promises and showing off garbage is back in full swing. Intellavision already jumped onto the hype train and want to release a new console in 2020.

Even Chris Chan believes he can convince Commodore to come back and release a modern day 8bit computer / super console. Which Chris 'herself' can be the mascot for! That just gives you an idea of exactly how exceptional these people really are.

Just because the ZX Spectrum revival was a success now everybody wants a piece of the pie. The difference is, the Speccy revival was such a major success because it was mostly a labor of love. Many old legacy developers came back to the scene and decided to make games for the system. The project was headed by a lot of people who worked on the original zx spectrum and wanted to bring a modern variation into the gaming world. They weren't just a cash grab looking to profit off of the Sinclair and Spectrum names.

Sega left the hardware market for a reason after the Dreamcast failed. They became a fulltime software developer and it's worked out very very well for them. Re-entering the hardware market would be the stupidest thing they ever conceived. Licensing out the Genesis / Megadrive to companies like TechToy and AtGames isn't Sega trying to get into the hardware market again, it's just smart business. I doubt Sega would even try to enter the handheld world given how Nintendo has firmly dominated it for decades now and that not even Sony could gain a foothold in it thanks to poor north american marketing.
