Agree with this- while it makes the government look weak, the best course of action is not to do anything that legitimizes their grievances (aka the system being oppressive), and to let human nature create its own divisions in the protests (riots, looting) that will turn the public away. This is how the Arab Spring started- governments chose to violently put down protests but only legitimized them and caused everything to escalate.Because most non-lethal methods aren't 100% guaranteed to be non-lethal and all it takes is for one person to have a bad reaction to them and you now reignited the protests. And in the end of the day the only people that matter are the rich ones that have an insurance for their shit and gated communities to prevent joggers from coming in.
Government action should be limited to protecting vital and/or expensive pieces of the economy- things like big box stores and strip malls are expendable (in fact, the buildings are designed to be, regardless). It's literally economic chump change when blacks burn down their own neighborhoods.
The only thing Trump needs to do, is to reassure the suburbs that he's doing something (National Guard), but not do anything beyond the above beyond maybe tossing that police officer to the wolves.
