What's the true purpose of this site?

Fully sincere answer is that this place is among the best spiritual successors to the spirit of the old internet. And that may well have happened accidentally since it all started to keep tabs on Chris and other lolcows. But since this is a site that actually values free speech, one of the last of it's kind, it's begun to attract a lot of oldfags.

I am one such oldfag. It's the best thing I've found since my old haunt shuttered in 2006, a vestige of days gone by. And it's not just about being able to say niggerfaggot or fedpost, it's deeper than that - this is one of the few places left where people can disagree with one another, dislike one another, hell, fucking hate one another, but neither can censor the other. Other than following a few very simple rules Null set down, we have freedom to say what we think.

To what I imagine is either his greatest chagrin or pride, we typically use that invaluable freedom to fedpost and call each other autistic faggots.

The purpose is to find inner peace. It's not very successful but at least I've gained a sense of hopelessness which is a start.

This is a place for refugees of the old internet to gather and laugh at people while we try to ignore the world going to shit all around us
I was going to write a response, but this is probably the best answer anyone could've given. Couldn't have said it better myself.

Shid bidge there's some good answers here. What's the purpose? Aggregating unfettered autism and raw human indecency in one place. Beyond that? To laugh. To show what the internet does to perfectly normal and well-adjusted people, lolcows and MATI forum users alike.

I think a secondary purpose is keeping a civil place for open discussion on anything. Seriously, you fags ask some stupid and/or inflammatory questions and still people find a way to have legitimate dialogue about it. It's like the opposite of every other discussion forum which usually devolve into retardation on every post.

Also a youngfag, and I could never get into Twitter. How are you supposed to say something that's more than 140 characters without having it being broken up into multiple tweets? I tend to stick with forums and blogs (and God forbid, the occasional Google doc manifesto) for this reason.
mobile phones had a 160 character limit per message
you paid per msg
you learnt to get the point across

It's a relic of the old internet with the purpose of laughing at and discussing eccentric things posted online. It's as innocent as that. A lot of these weird things tend to come from the same individuals, creating the concept of the lolcow. It's not a hate forum, not a personal army forum, not a political debate forum. Just a forum to laugh at the weird stuff the internet brings. I think of it as townsfolk laughing at things the village idiot does, though letting him be, applied to the internet as a whole.

Sidenote - probably the only positive thing about where the internet has gone (smartphones, social media etc) is that it actually encourages people to become lolcows, and thus provides us with an increasing amount of content over time.

I don't know if you could even say this site has just one purpose, at least not anymore. Laughing at Chris was the genesis, and it grew from there to laughing at and documenting general lolcowdom. But, for me, its simply a place to laugh at idiots and crazy people who make a spectacle of themselves. I've been very successful at culling nutters from my life, bit I'm still fascinated by them, and this wondrous repository of narcissism and 'tism is just chock full of it, so much so that I'm forced to be very selective in the crazy I follow, lest I spend too much time here. I can study, lament, and mock the human condition without actually having to deal with the worst aspects of it, and I can discuss it, argue about it, and shitpost over it with the somewhat like-minded individuals who have also found their way here.
